There’s a common assumption that breathing pauses during sleep are always caused by airway obstruction.

But that’s not always the full picture.

Your body relies on carbon dioxide (CO₂) as the primary signal to breathe, not oxygen.

When CO₂ levels drop too low (often from chronic over-breathing), your brain can delay the next breath.

If levels fall below what’s called the apnea threshold, breathing can pause temporarily, even without a blocked airway.

This is why some people experience disrupted breathing patterns that don’t fully resolve with structural treatments alone.
