Cowichan Hospice

Cowichan Hospice Person-centered support through end-of-life, & through grief leading up to & following death in the Cowichan region

Cowichan Valley Hospice Society offers support, information, and companionship to those living with an advancing illness, family and friends as well as those grieving the death of a loved one. The arms of hospice reach out to clients in their homes, hospital, residential care facilities and any other environment within the Cowichan region. Hospice services are offered by staff and by volunteers in

each community in our valley. Volunteers receive core training, ongoing education, and supervision in order to support clients through the palliative and grief journeys.

What a day. On Saturday, May 9th, the Cowichan Life Cyclers gathered at Canadian Tire Duncan for our Spinathon β€” and the community showed up in the most beautiful way.

To every donor who gave generously, every family who cheered us on, and Canadian Tire Duncan for opening their space and their hearts to us β€” thank you. Your kindness fuels everything we do.

And to our incredible riders who gave their all on those bikes β€” you are the heart of this team. We are so grateful for you.

Every dollar raised stays right here in the Cowichan region, supporting compassionate hospice care for local families. Thank you for making that possible.

We invite you to come watch a film β€” and support hospice care in the Cowichan region.

This month’s Reel Alternatives screening brings us The Baltimorons β€” a heartfelt and melancholically funny film about loneliness, second chances, and the unexpected people who help us find our way back to ourselves.

On Christmas Eve, newly sober Cliff finds himself wandering through Baltimore after a dental emergency leads him to Didi, a lonely dentist navigating her own disappointments and uncertainties. What begins as an awkward encounter slowly unfolds into an honest and deeply human connection between two people trying to figure out how to move forward.

A touching story about healing, vulnerability, and the courage it takes to change your life β€” even when you least expect it.

We invite you to come watch a film β€” and support hospice care in the Cowichan region.

This month's Reel Alternatives screening brings us Shepherds β€” a quietly beautiful French-Canadian film about leaving behind what no longer fits, and finding your way toward something more meaningful.

When Mathyas trades his Montreal advertising career for life as a shepherd in the South of France, he discovers that the pastoral world is far more demanding β€” and far more rewarding β€” than he imagined. A chance encounter with Γ‰lise, who has made her own sudden leap away from her former life, gives his journey an unexpected new direction. Together, with a herd in their care, they head toward the mountains and a different kind of life.

A story about slowing down, questioning what matters, and the courage it takes to begin again.

This week, we want to talk about the people who make this work possible in the quietest, most powerful way.

Our volunteers.

When we think about what hospice volunteers do, what comes to mind isn't a dramatic act. It's more like a steady flame β€” the kind that makes someone feel less alone in one of life's most tender moments.

They sit with people. They listen without agenda. They hold space when words aren't enough.

In a world that often rushes past grief, our volunteers choose to stay.

This National Volunteer Week, thank you. For the light you bring β€” and for trusting us to walk alongside you in this work.
