Hi to everyone who's found me lately, I'm Brandy. I've been tattooing for almost ten years, working mostly in fine line botanicals and florals, in colour and black and grey, out of Black Water Electric Tattoo. Nobody tells you when to exfoliate, only that you should

If you go with acids: a low strength salicylic or glycolic bar/ wash/ lotion (only choose one), two or three times a week starting two weeks out, then stop completely one week before your appointment. Acid-treated skin is thinner and more reactive, so it stings more and takes ink less predictably. Hot tip: if you've never used these products before, don't start now. Use the physical exfoliation below

If you go with physical: a sugar scrub or soft washcloth or an exfoliating bar once, about a week out. Light pressure, one pass in the shower

Use lotion daily for the two weeks until your appointment, and nothing on the area the morning of

Peonies mean different things depending on where you look.

In Chinese tradition they stand for prosperity, honour and good fortune, and they've been called the king of flowers for centuries. In Japanese art they turn up beside lions and read as bravery. Victorian flower language went a different direction entirely and had them meaning bashfulness.

Whatever the meaning behind them, they are all equally beautiful
