Scared the bear away 4 times last night!!!!

We really need a perimeter fence. Our property is on the 'bear track' and it's lovely to see them pass by and meander through the meadow, but when they stop to eat our garden, chickens, or bees, we try to send them the message that crazy scary humans will run rampant at you with a billowing garbage bag!

Plantain Salve / Ointment ( aka 'STOP πŸ›‘ Bleeding 🩸 INSTANTLY' )

This was the original handmade herbal first aid salve we were introduced to over a decade ago. . . Plantain πŸͺ΄, a super common lawn w**d that can be broken or crushed ( with teeth, fingernails or cutting tool) to release the juice from the leaves and applied directly to minor bleeding, stopping the flow in seconds. . Momma Jess finds the best method is to use something clean (Kleenex, or water then dry cloth) to remove pooling blood, and then quickly cover exposed cut with a layer of crushed leaves or plantain salve.

During the summer it is wise to leave a few plantain plants growing in clean spaces where you work or play so they are readily available when cuts happen... But by harvesting the leaves and infusing them in olive oil, the medical properties are also released and can be added to liquid beeswax to form a shelf stable ointment that can be used all year round:)

Plantain stops bleeding by drawing tissues together and then aids in healing skin cells and irritation.

Quite honestly, we find it is about as close as you can get to real life nature magic πŸͺ„!! It is so effective and we have been so thankful to have this plant and its wisdom in our lives, especially in some dicey situations!

This batch was soaked in olive oil for 5 months and then the 1 cup of plantain infused oil was warmed with 1/2 cup of shaved beeswax.

The friendly nudge from the universe πŸ’« when we have leftover produce from the market is that we need to preserve it for ourselves…

We are beginning to learn the ins and outs of what we can and cannot sell at the market, given our public health clearance, and so it forces us to decide whether the market leftovers become chicken compost, or in this case, dried herbs for our own personal use. . . there's likely a years worth for some of these 😜
We always have the intention of preserving that which we cannot eat, but rarely get around to it, so the current situation (weekly market) is pushing us in that direction more frequently, despite Jess' story that there's never enough time between four homeschool kids, housework, and homestead 'must do' chores! 🧼 πŸͺ£ πŸ“ 🌱 🍴 πŸ₯£ πŸ§ΉπŸ’©πŸ“–βœοΈπŸ›πŸ§ΊπŸ«˜πŸ«™πŸ₯šπŸŒΏπŸͺ΅

The sage, thyme, and oregano pictured here has been rinsed three times ( next to nothing came off ✨ πŸ˜‰) laid out to dry and turned over, next we will remove the leaves from stems and let fully dry before storing in glass jars πŸ«™

Goodbye lilacs, until next year!! This is the third year we've experienced the massive groves of lilacs around our property in bloom, and they were noticeably more aromatic than the previous years and seemed to last a lot longer. They are invasive and very difficult to eradicate, so we do our best to enjoy them when we're not pulling, snipping, or sawing them out 😐.

Today's work included kids' excursion to a fishing spot 🐟 and lots of w**ding in the garden to transplant the squash and melons! β˜˜οΈπŸ‰
