A study examining surgeon ergonomics found that operations averaged 4.3 hours, with 75% of surgeons working primarily in a standing position. Surgeons also reported remaining in a fixed position for an average of 2 hours at a time.

The researchers concluded that musculoskeletal complaints were common among surgeons and highlighted the importance of improving ergonomics in the operating room.
