Winnifred Stewart

Winnifred Stewart Winnifred Stewart (WS) has been enhancing the lives of individuals with diverse abilities since 1953. Mrs.

Winnifred Mary Stewart was a very determined woman who had a son named Parker, born with a developmental disability. She wanted to give her son every possible chance to grow and develop to his full potential, but she encountered obstacles and resistance from a society that, at the time, felt children like Parker were lost causes. Winnifred strongly believed that people with developmental disabilit

ies had more to offer to society than society was prepared to offer them-a revolutionary thought at that time. Along with a small group of parents, Winnifred started the Edmonton Association for the Mentally Handicapped and the Winnifred Stewart School, which was the first of its kind in Canada. At its peak, the school served over 450 students, until 1982 when children with disabilities were integrated into the regular school system. Today, Winnifred Stewart (WS) carries on the legacy started by Winnifred, and the spirit of its remarkable namesake continues to live on through the organization. WS has come a long way from its early days as a school, and it continues to build on Winnifred's work of helping people with diverse abilities. More than 200 people are currently involved in Winnifred Stewart's residential, community recreation, and volunteer and employment support programs.

❤️ It’s National AccessAbility Week.

At Winnifred Stewart, we’re joining communities across Canada to recognize the work it takes to build a country where everyone belongs.

Every day, we see the strength, leadership, and contributions of people with intellectual disabilities and diverse abilities. We also see how change happens when barriers are named, challenged, and removed.

We believe something simple and powerful: everyone deserves a voice, a choice, and a place.

When people are heard, supported in making their own decisions, and included in their communities, everyone benefits.

This work doesn’t happen once. It takes ongoing commitment from all of us.

This year’s theme, “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada,” is a reminder that we all have a role to play.

Where are you seeing barriers come down or belonging grow in your community? Share with us ⬇️

Ending the week on a high note 🎶

Music brings people together, and today that looked like drums, tambourines, singing, dancing, and lots of fun. Individuals and staff came together to enjoy the moment.

These experiences reflect the power of community when people come together to have fun, express themselves, and simply be present.

Happy Friday! 💙

“I had a good time with you and everybody.” 🩵

That’s how Gail summed up her day at the Muttart Conservatory.

She chose how she wanted to spend her time, exploring the flowers, interacting with families and sharing smiles with kids and babies, and stopping at the café for a coffee and a cookie. In a place where she felt comfortable and engaged, she moved through the
day in her own way.

The highlight was simple and joyful. She reached out, took the hands of her support worker, Shanitah, and started to dance.

A day shaped by Gail’s voice, her choices, and a place where she could truly belong.

Every week, we come together to learn American Sign Language (ASL) in a way that’s shaped by the group.

At a pace that works for everyone, individuals build confidence, strengthen communication, and find new ways to express themselves.

These shared moments create connection—and over time, they truly add up. 💙

This week, we recognize Community Disability Services Professionals and the work they do every day alongside the individuals they support.

Their role is built on consistency, patience, and genuine relationships. Showing up, listening, and working with people to support meaningful daily lives.

Thank you for the care, commitment, and community you help create one connection at a time.

We are so proud to celebrate Lora, who hosted her very own art show in Winnipeg through Arts Accessibility Network Manitoba, in partnership with the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.

From March 6 to April 24, 2026, Lora’s paintings were featured in the gallery, giving her work the spotlight it deserves. She even travelled through rain and snow to attend the grand opening, marking a meaningful milestone in her journey as an artist.

The exhibit was a great success. We celebrate Lora’s creativity, dedication, and the strength of community that grows when people are supported to share their gifts.

Happy Mother’s Day 💐

Today, we celebrate every mother. Birth mothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, grandmothers, chosen family, and all those who care, nurture, and stand alongside others with strength and love.

Our organization began because of Dr. Winnifred Stewart. As a mother, her deep love for her son, Parker, inspired her to imagine something better, not only for him but for many others. That love grew into a vision grounded in community, dignity, and belonging, and it continues to guide the work we do today.

On this Mother’s Day, we honour Dr. Winnifred Stewart and all that she stood for, alongside the many mothers and mother figures who show care, resilience, and generosity every day.

To all mothers, in every form and every season of life, Happy Mother’s Day. 💙

Behind the Scenes at the Alberta Film School 📸

We loved spending time at a high fashion photoshoot this Monday, May 4th at the Alberta Film School. Laurie, Leanne, Dena, and Hannah each stepped in front of the camera and brought their own creativity, confidence, and individuality to the experience.

It was incredible to see everyone try something new, express themselves, and support one another throughout the shoot. Moments like these remind us how powerful creative spaces can be for personal growth and community connection.

A big thank you to for welcoming us into your space and for sharing your skills, creativity, and passion with our community.
