Today, community leader of issued an important statement calling attention to the ways Albertan 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations have failed to fully acknowledge, support, and amplify Black History Month.
We recognize that while we shared content highlighting Black creators and contributed financially to related causes, these efforts - though well-intentioned - were not enough.
They did not go far enough in meaningfully centering Black experiences within our community, nor did they adequately reflect our responsibility to actively confront and dismantle anti-Blackness within our own organization and in the broader spaces we influence.
We hear this call to action.
We acknowledge that insufficient action is not neutral - it reflects internalized anti-Blackness and complacency.
And we take responsibility.
Moving forward, our commitment is not to a moment, but to sustained change.
We commit to:
• Engaging in ongoing anti-racism education and organizational reflection, including examining policies, leadership structures, and decision-making processes.
• Building reciprocal relationships with Black-led organizations and leaders, including Raricanow, not only during Black History Month, but year-round.
• Creating space for Black voices, stories, and leadership within our programming and community initiatives.
• Allocating resources - time, funding, and platform - in ways that reflect our stated values of equity and justice.
• Use privilege to disrupt by calling out racist behavior in our communities, using various media platforms and social circle.
• A commitment to confronting anti-black racism through education, sensitization and being active bystanders to intervene when they witness Anti-Black Racism in the Q***r communities.
• Reporting back transparently on the steps we take and the progress we make.
We understand that accountability is demonstrated through action, not statements.
We will continue to listen, learn, and do better.
Black Lives Matter.
Black voices are essential to 2SLGTBQIA+ liberation.
