Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre Society SCITCS is an Edmonton-based non-profit org in Canada dedicated to enhance the quality of life of Albertans with spinal cord injury.

The Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Centre (Northern Alberta) Society (SCITCS) is a non-profit registered charity dedicated to helping others help themselves. Run by a volunteer board and sustained by a dedicated group of volunteers, SCITCS continues to provide support to persons with a spinal cord injury through seven main facilities:

(1) The Steadward Centre at the University of Alberta, Edmonton.

(2) The Saville Community Sports Centre. (3) The Neurological Unit at the Glenrose Provincial Rehabilitation Hospital Edmonton. (4) The SCITCS FES Research Laboratory Faculty of Medicine, University of Alberta. (5) The Don Wheaton YMCA
(6) The Castle Down YMCA
(7) The University of Alberta Hospital

People living with spinal cord injury in Canada can experience varying levels of access to essential supports that help maintain health and independence.

This recent review published in Frontiers, in partnership with Kris Cowley and Peter Athanasopoulos, identified major gaps across provinces in coverage for personal care support, bladder and bowel supplies, and wheelchairs. In some provinces, funding is income-based and may be reduced even when individuals are earning very little.

The findings point to opportunities for more equitable and consistent approaches to SCI support across Canada.
