Mu Sigma Chapter

Formed on March 24, 1992, Mu Sigma Chapter is the 304th chapter established at Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

The mission of Sigma Theta Tai International Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) is to improve the health of people worldwide by increasing the scientific base of nursing practice. Its members are nurses committed to the pursuit of excellence in clinical practice, education, research and leadership. Benefits of Membership:

Alexandra Ramsay is a nursing student in the After Degree Honors Program at the University of Alberta, where her research focuses on a genealogical analysis of trauma- and violence-informed care. Her work examines the historical and discursive construction of psychological trauma, drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives to better understand contemporary care practices. She previously completed a degree in History and her academic background bridges humanities and healthcare, informing a critical and context-aware approach to nursing practice.

Alexandra has demonstrated leadership as the 2nd Year After Degree Representative for the Nursing Undergraduate Association (NUA), advocating for student needs and contributing to program engagement. Additionally, as a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, she has engaged in discussions with federal stakeholders in Ottawa on the need for cultural change within military institutions, with a focus on improving supports and reducing sexual violence.

Jonathan is a registered nurse with over eight years of clinical experience across diverse acute care settings. He has served as a preceptor to nursing students and a mentor to early career nurses, supporting clinical skill development, professional socialization, and resilience. Jonathan holds a Master of Nursing from the University of Alberta, during which he conducted a scoping review on mentorship challenges faced by mentors and mentees across Sub-Saharan Africa, informing culturally responsive mentorship strategies.

His practice blends clinical expertise with a commitment to education, and he has led initiatives to improve orientation processes, strengthen feedback mechanisms, and enhance competency development for new and transitioning nurses. Passionate about evidence-based practice, Jonathan is transitioning into cardiovascular research nursing, with an interest in generating and translating evidence to improve patient outcomes. He is known for collaborative leadership, clear communication, and a pragmatic approach to mentoring that prioritizes safety, competence, and career development.

Madiha Alnoor is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours) program at the University of Alberta. She has a strong interest in women’s and children’s health, as well as mental health, and brings experience in public health research, including work on initiatives addressing gender-based violence in minority communities. She is passionate about advancing equitable, trauma-informed care through both clinical practice and research.

Currently, she works as a Registered Nurse in Edmonton. Outside of work, she enjoys watching Formula One, as well as running, swimming, and spending time in nature.

Kristin Zelyck is a registered nurse of 24 years. She graduated with her BScN from the University of Alberta in 2002. Most of her clinical experience has been in intensive care settings. In 2019 she completed her Master of Arts in Bioethics and Healthy Policy from the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics at Loyola, Chicago. She is an Associate Teaching Professor at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Nursing and currently, she is a full time PhD student in Nursing at the University of Alberta.

Kristin's PhD research focuses on re-storying dominant colonial narratives in nursing to encounter the complexities of healthcare and nursing among Indigenous peoples and Canadians. She approaches her research as non-Indigenous nurse with European settler ancestry and aims to respond to treaty responsibilities as an ally in this work. She will be approaching her research using Indigenous Metissage and qualitative methods to braid together stories of the past and present to imagine a preferred future in nursing education and nursing practice.

Fadodun Oluwadamilola is a registered nurse and research scholar with a keen interest in women's health, child health and global health. She is a graduate of the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and the School of Nursing, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria and a recipient of numerous awards. Oluwadamilola is interested in using scientific-based evidence from research to drive health policy development, analysis, and implementation bearing in mind the impact on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 4 and 5. She continually strives to contribute to these SDG goals through selfless engagement in community development projects, research and research collaborations.

Aksha Hemnani is an Honors Nursing student with a strong academic foundation and a commitment to compassionate, person-centered care. She is a recipient of the Right Honourable Don Mazankowski Scholarship in Nursing and the University of Alberta Undergraduate Scholarship (International), awarded for academic excellence and leadership. Beyond academics, Aksha is passionate about contributing to her community through leadership and service. She volunteers as a first-aid provider and newcomer mentor, fostering inclusivity and meaningful connections. She is also an active member of Mu Sigma’s member involvement and publicity committee, managing social media engagement.

Her honors research focuses on mental health care among people living with chronic kidney disease, reflecting her interest in holistic and equitable care. Passionate about critical care, Aksha looks forward to her upcoming role as an undergraduate nurse in the General Systems ICU and Burns Unit at the University of Alberta Hospital this summer. As an inductee into the Mu Sigma chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, Aksha is excited to take on greater leadership opportunities and create meaningful impact through her actions. She is honored to be recognized among peers who value excellence, integrity, and service, and remains committed to growing as a lifelong learner.

Oluwatoyosi Awotundun is a Registered Nurse in Alberta, Canada, with over seven years of experience across emergency, acute, community, and home care settings. She previously served as a Senior Nursing Officer in a high-acuity emergency department in Nigeria, where she developed strong leadership, rapid assessment, and critical decision-making skills in fast-paced clinical environments. She currently practices in home care while continuing to build her expertise in acute and emergency care.
She holds a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree with Second Class Upper honours and is also a Registered Midwife and Registered Public Health Nurse in Nigeria. Passionate about evidence-based practice, patient safety, and compassionate care, Oluwatoyosi is particularly interested in advancing maternal and child health outcomes and contributing to healthcare leadership. Known for her calm demeanor, warmth, and drive for continuous growth, she is committed to making meaningful impacts in the lives of vulnerable patients while growing as a nurse leader.

Lieutenant Precious Iheukwumere Ikonne, studied nursing at the School of Nursing Amachara in Abia State. On completion of his general nursing program, he proceeded to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu for a post-basic course (Cardiothoracic Nursing). He was employed at Babcock University Medical Center and he furthered his nursing program at Valley View University Accra Ghana, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing with a First class. Upon graduation, he rejoined Babcock University Teaching Hospital as an Intensive Care Nurse. He resigned in 2016 to join the Nigerian Air Force where he serves till date. �
He has grown through the ranks and presently a Flight Lieutenant. He holds a Master of Science degree in Nursing with specialization in Adult Health/Medical-Surgical Nursing from Babcock University, Ogun State, Nigeria. He still has a passion for Gerontology Nursing. He is currently a lecturer at the Nigerian Air Force College of Nursing Sciences Kaduna. He is happily married to Barrister (Mrs) Deborah E. Ikonne, an Intellectual Property Law Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Babcock University and the union is blessed with three children - Rebecca, Aquila and Audrey. At his leisure, he loves traveling, caring for patients, meeting new friends, singing, and teaching.

Abigail Kyerewaa Adom is a second-year Master of Nursing student at the University of Alberta and a Registered Nurse in Alberta with diverse clinical experience. Her background spans acute care, maternal health, and community health, alongside her role as a clinical preceptor in Ghana, where she mentored nursing students and supported their transition into professional practice. She is deeply committed to leadership, academic excellence, and service values reflected in her recognition by both Sigma and the Golden Key Honour Society. ��Abigail is passionate about advancing culturally competent care and addressing health disparities, drawing on her experiences in Ghana to inform her perspective on equitable healthcare delivery. Her leadership interests focus on health promotion, maternal and child health, and strengthening nursing education to better bridge the gap between theory and practice. Abigail is dedicated to lifelong learning and professional growth, with aspirations to influence nursing practice, education, and policy.
