✨UPDATE✨ As of Sept 1st the darling clinic I've been working out of in Stony Plain named Treestone officially becomes Kare Collective Wellness ❤️ This past month gradual changes have already been happening, from updated interior paint to new couches and decor. Seeing the main sign change this Friday felt the most official though!

FAQs:
1. Did I know there would be an ownership and brand change when I signed on?
- Yes, absolutely. I got to meet both owners during my interview meeting and was lucky enough that we all hit it off spectacularly!

2. What is happening with Treestone now?
- The owner of Treestone is stepping back from running the clinic, but she's still working here as her own entity (same as me operating Unwind With Ashley)

3. Will there be any more big changes?
- Not that I'm aware of! Maybe some tweaks to decor here and there, but because my booking systems and scheduling are completely independent of Kare Collective, nothing within my own practice really changes :)

✨ Kare Collective is having its grand opening open house on Monday, Sept 14th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. There's going to be ribbon cutting, drinks, snacks, and door prizes for anyone who wants to stop by and check it out 😊

This is probably my most used and favorite specialty in my massage practice.

Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch modality that focuses on soothing the nervous system by unwinding tissues and joints. The gentle touch is often around the head, spine, and tailbone, but it is a full body treatment.

There can be elements of hands off techniques (to balance chakras or release energy cysts) and SomatoEmotional release (intentional dialogue paired with hands on techniques to facilitate releases of emotion trapped in the body) as needed, but often treatments are done in silence and are incredibly soothing.

Cranio can be done undressed (same as massage) or clothed. For clothed sessions, please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Avoid jeans, belts, and thick waist bands, bras with wires, or anything else overly restrictive.

Cranio is excellent for:
✨ Headaches and migraines
✨ Concussions
✨ PTSD
✨ Anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders
✨ Tinnitus, dizzyness
✨ Jaw problems
✨ Following a car accident
✨ Trauma recovery
✨ Pre and Post surgery
✨ Pregnancy
✨ Relaxation

Recommended booking time:
I often blend at least 5 minutes of cranio into each massage, though clients can request a half and half treatment with the time split evenly between massage and cranio. You can also book a cranio appointment completely separate from massage. Options include 30 minutes (best for children or clients who need a quick tune up), 45 minutes (most common), or a maximum of 60 minutes.

QOTD: Have you ever had craniosacral therapy?

My job is pretty sweet. I get to work in a warm, dim room with soothing music. I can wear yoga pants and sneakers daily. There are minimal stressors or safety risks.

However, as lovely as my career is day to day, occasionally activities outside of work affect my job. I'm not talking about workout soreness or that time I broke my ankle playing soccer (but yes, I did come to work on crutches and massaged sitting down all month lol). Instead, I'm talking about the reason I refuse to play basketball with my boyfriend or garden without gloves.

Finger injuries as an RMT seriously suck 😅 I've been lucky enough to avoid any sprains, but whenever I get a paper cut or a minor cooking injury my first panicked thought is, "Omg, will I be able to work tomorrow?"

Last week I was cutting a really tough watermelon and used my index finger to reinforce the blade 🤦 Turns out the back was also sharp... Luckily it wasn't deep and a finger cot covered the injury site so I wouldn't have to worry about it splitting or getting infected. I only had to work one shift before vacation anyway, so I knew it would heal quickly.

BUT THEN I GOT A CASE OF THE MONDAYS 😒 and on my drive home from BC I caught my finger in the clasp that seals the soft top of the truck box. Sooooo I'm back to wearing a finger cot this week... Honestly, I prefer minor cuts like this so I can just wear the single-finger glove as opposed to full gloves when the injuries are on the knuckles or palms. Clients tend not to notice a difference when it's just the cot, but gloves can be a bit noisy.

If I worked a normal desk job I could probably just bandaid this, but at least there are options so I can keep working!

✨ FUN FACT: If you ever have an RMT that wears gloves, I promise you it's NOT because they don't want to touch you. Most therapists who have to wear gloves often have sensitive skin and are covering excema triggered by massage oils. This is actually why I use organic massage lotion instead of oil. It costs more and I go through it faster, but my hands (and many of my clients) appreciate it!

Small humans need time to unwind too! Reasons why babies and kids get massages and/or craniosacral therapy:

✨ Post-birth head shape support
✨ Digestive struggles
✨ Stress, anxiety, and emotion management
✨ Highly athletic lifestyles
✨ Growing pains
✨ Injury recovery
✨ To learn about anatomy and self-care

Note: not all massage therapists work with infants or children.

I personally work on infants under 2 and children 5 or older, though I really love working with young clients between 7 to 13 years old. My rule of thumb is if the kid wants (or needs) a massage, can be relatively quiet/respectful of the clinic space, and is able to tolerate lying on a table for body work for at least twenty minutes, then I'd be more than happy to work on them!

Most often, sessions with kids are focused on relaxation, soothing aches or elevated nervous systems, and teaching them about their bodies, autonomy, and self-care.

Treatments with babies tend to be more energetic balancing, digestive support, and alignment focused. Right now I actually have a two month old client coming to me because he is favoring one side (always turning his head to the right) and developing a flat spot on his head, so I'm treating him with a combination of massage and cranio.

FAQ answers:
- 30 minute sessions are recommended to start
- if we end the session early, you will still be charged the minimum appointment time
- During a massage, children can be undressed if they're comfortable (athletic shorts are encouraged) or they can wear loose, comfortable clothing which I work on top of. Same as adults, draping is used to maintain the client's modesty and safety.
- Parents are encouraged to stay in the treatment room for the first visit and welcome to stay for subsequent massages until the child is comfortable on their own.

QOTD: How old were you when you got your first professional massage? Under ten? Under twenty? Under thirty? Tell me in the comments!

Intraoral massage 🦷 What is it and why do people get it done? Usually a client's initial reaction when I tell them I want to put my fingers in their mouth is a general wariness, only to be shocked by how much relief it brings.

WHAT IS INTRAORAL?
- I use a combination of massage and craniosacral therapy techniques
- The treatment is gentle as I work on the muscles in the cheeks, the ligaments of the joint, the bones of the roof of the mouth, and the soft tissues under the tongue
- I wear a mask and gloves for the treatment
- I teach my clients hand signals so they can communicate when I've hit a tender spot or when they need breaks

EXCELLENT FOR:
- TMJ dysfunction
- clenching & grinding
- clicking
- lock jaw
- headaches
- sinus pressure
- tinnitus
- pre and post dental work

✨ In the cases of chronic jaw problems, clients almost always ask for intraoral again after their first treatment! ✨

RECOMMENDED BOOKING TIME:
Many clients request to include intraoral for 10-20 minutes of their massage appointment, or you can book a 30 minute massage to work on the jaw and head exclusively.

POST DENTAL SURGERY:
If you come to me fresh out of a major dental surgery, I will delay breaking out the gloves. Instead, I'll gently treat the external jaw, throat, and neck to reduce swelling and soothe pain until the critical healing has happened. My general rule of thumb is that until your stitches have dissolved, my fingers aren't going in your mouth. Massage in the early healing phase can still help speed up recovery and ease pain!

MASSAGE OPENINGS THIS WEEK AT UNWIND WITH ASHLEY:
Today, July 24th, at 1:15, 2:30, or 4:00 for 30, 60, or 90 minutes
Book online or message me directly to get in :)

Every job has a price, whether it's from physical strain or having to stay in a specific position for prolonged time, but there are some careers that stand out as extra hard on the body. This is a short list of jobs I've seen over my 12 years as an RMT that have the highest physical costs. There are careers I haven't seen firsthand but I'd say this is a pretty solid base of classic jobs that perpetually cause pain:

- mechanics
- hair dressers
- photographers
- paramedics, nurses, surgeons (any healthcare practitioner working extensive hours, in high-stress situations, and/or doing random physically demanding tasks)
- oral hygienists and dentists
- computer jobs
- artists
- mothers and care-givers
- many trades such as masons, plumbers, painters, and electricians (if you're working in unnatural positions, working above your head, and/or doing heavy lifting)

Read the slides for more details on the physical price of these careers and my recommended self-care!

*Also note, this list focuses on jobs with physical demands and specific pain patterns I see, yet there are plenty of high-stress careers like physiologists and teachers that REALLY need massages too, their pain patterns are just less predictable.

I'm not saying you should quit your job if it's on my list. At the end of the day every job has some kind of price (even being a grocery clerk, waitress, or sitting in a forklift all day causes repetitive strain patterns); it's just a matter of what you're willing to sacrifice and if you're prepared to do the self-care necessary to maintain your health through your working years. As your massage therapist and your body's biggest advocate, I create custom treatment plans to make sure you can keep working and to reduce the risk of injuries over time. No one wants to limp into retirement. Take care of your body now. You only get one in a lifetime.

✨ QOTD: Is your job on this list? Or is there a job you think should be on this list but isn't? Comment below and I'll reply if I've seen it in my practice!

In my books BIRTHDAYS = MASSAGE, always 🎉 Can you believe that I turned thirty-four this past weekend? I spent Sunday morning running my butt off at Activate (which resulted in some very sore legs and a much-needed massage two days later lol), an evening of card games, patio drinks, pizza, a movie (we watched Sheep Detectives lol) and all the doggy snuggles. It was a lovely, wholesome weekend, and I was so relieved to have the time to unwind ❤️

QOTD: Did you know I offer birthday di$count$ for massage at both my clinics? Whether you prefer relaxation or a full-body therapeutic work-over, I am always happy to see clients on their birthday 🎂

✨ NEW Wednesday availability in Stony Plain! ✨ This week I begin the second phase of moving my practice from Edmonton back to my home town. Ironically I think my body was JUST starting to get used to the heavier four full days of massage, but I can't imagine a better time of year to lighten the load.

✅ Phase one: 3 days at BBN, 1 day at UWA
✅ Phase two: 2 days at BBN, 2 days at UWA
☑️ Phase three: 1 day at BBN, 3 days at UWA (most likely begins in the fall)
☑️ Final transition: 4 days at UWA (most likely in the New Year)

I still don't technically have a "final day" set at Back Be Nimble, it's entirely dependent on how fast my new availability out in Stony fills. I will continue to reassess my hours every two to three months, and I promise to keep everyone up to date here and in person as things progress.

✨ MASSAGE OPENINGS THIS WEEK at Unwind With Ashley in Stony Plain:
July 1st - Canada Day - now fully booked
July 3rd opening at 12:00 p.m.

Both schedules are available online, though Edmonton availability is significantly limited. Message me if you need help getting into my calendar or if you have any questions.

Cheers to kicking off phase two 🥂

Ever had a massage therapist put their fingers in your ears? It happens to be one of my signature moves! Temporal releases are a craniosacral therapy technique designed to unwind tension in the scalp, head, and brain.

EXCELLENT FOR:
✨ Head injuries
✨ Headaches
✨ Migraines
✨ Eye strain
✨ Brain fog
✨ Jaw tension
✨ Sinus relief
✨ Tinnitus

THE ANATOMY:
Imagine your brain is split in a top half and bottom half, and in between is a piece of paper. This divider wall is more like a spider web in quality, and its job is to circulate fluid and messages within the brain. Unfortunately, sometimes it gets bogged down, restricted, or twisted from external factors, causing slower thinking or discomfort.

COMMON CAUSES OF RESTRICTIONS:
❌ stress
❌ tight ponytails or hair styles
❌ tight hats/headwear
❌ dehydration
❌ jaw clenching/teeth grinding
❌ sinus inflammation
❌ hormone fluctuations

THE TECHNIQUE:
When I gently grab your ears, I am using them as a lever to engage and traction the bones of the skull. I assess if there's missing mobility and encourage the body's natural desire to self-correct by unwinding whatever is presenting as stuck. This technique helps circulate the fluid in your brain, relieve tension in the scalp muscles, and can help soothe the nervous system.

PLEASE NOTE:
This photo is a poor demonstration of the technique and is here primarily to draw you in and make you smile. I wasn't doing a temporal release on Jackson when it was taken; I was making fun of how big his floppy ears are fully extended hahaha. He does, however, adore ear rubs and highly recommends you book yourself in for one!

Comment below if I've ever put my fingers in your ears 😅🙉

Beware, this post might make some people angry but I'm just telling you what I see in my practice consistently 😅

By far the clients with the best overall muscle tone and balance are dancers. They aren't injury free, but compared to the other sports I listed, there is a huge difference in the severity and frequency of injuries. (Maybe my perspective on this sport is skewed though because I don't see a lot of adult dancers...)

The absolute worst are my hockey players (especially adults), where I consistently see a new injury every other appointment. I'm a huge advocate for movement, but there is a very easy line to draw between which sports actually support great body health and which ones cause repetitive injuries that affect the body long term, even in children.

To be clear, I'm not saying quit your sport if you ended up on the worst sports list, but I do recommend that as clients age out of their twenties that looking into other activities might be worth it.

A lot of my massage practice with athletes is often training them out of the belief that treatment needs to hurt to be effective. Half of the time you're coming to see me is because you have micro-tears and damaged muscles. Yes, I'll release knots and realign any bones that are out, but I personally don't believe you need a full body deep tissue session to be your best. I prefer a moderated approach, deeper where necessary, and finding the perfect pressure to create relief without causing more harm.

✨ Name a sport that isn't in this post and I'll share my body-wise opinion if I've seen it in my practice! ✨
