Sebaceous Filaments vs. Blackheads: Stop Attacking Your Face

Not everything on your nose is a blackhead.
Read that again.

Sebaceous Filaments
What they are: Totally normal. They line your pores and help move oil to the surface.

What they look like: Tiny, uniform dots (usually grey, tan, or slightly yellow)

Where: Nose, chin, sometimes forehead
Key truth: You CANNOT permanently remove them
(because your skin literally needs them)

If you extract them?

They’ll be back in like… 24–72 hours. Congrats, you did nothing but irritate your skin.

What actually helps:
•Oil cleansing (melts buildup, doesn’t traumatize pores)
•Salicylic acid (BHA)
•Retinoids (regulate oil over time)
•Consistency > aggression

What you’re seeing isn’t “dirt” it’s a sebum plug formed inside the hair follicle.

Each pore is actually a tiny unit called the pilosebaceous follicle —> a hair + oil gland system.

When excess sebum (oil), dead skin cells, and keratin build up, they compact around the hair shaft. Over time, this forms a comedone (blackhead or whitehead).

So when we extract and you see a tiny hair attached, that’s because the plug formed around it, anchoring everything together inside the follicle.

The dark tip of a blackhead?
Not dirt! Your skin and acne are NOT DIRTY. It's oxidized melanin and lipids exposed to air.

Now let’s talk inflammation:

When that follicle becomes irritated or compromised, it can lead to folliculitis. An inflammatory response often triggered by bacteria, friction, or trapped debris within the follicle.

Proper extractions that should be done by professionals:

– Reduce pressure within the follicle
– Remove the impaction without damaging surrounding tissue

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses controlled wound therapy to puncture micro-injuries to the skin. This can be done virtually anywhere on the body creating a versatile treatment for anyone who would like to reduce the appearance of lines, scars and stretch marks.

Although microneedling is considered minimally invasive, it is still invasive! Not everyone is a candidate for microneedling.

Consultations are always complimentary but have a $50 no-show fee.
