It was time for a slight change in name to reflect my immersion into osteopathy these last 8 years 💚

Everything else will stay the same, I am just replacing "Therapy" with "Osteopathy" 😉

Doesn't even look like the same horse, right?

Coloring aside, this is because horses are not skeletally mature until at least 5.5 years old. This applies to smaller in stature mares - switch to a male, add in more height and a longer neck and it will be closer to 8 years old before all growth plates are fused.

The last fusion to occur happens in the spine and the lower neck - this is why we need to be so careful about how we develop our young horses. We are sitting directly on this fragile area and (hopefully) asking them to lift the base of their neck as part of the recipe of self-carriage. We must respect the instability in these areas the first handful of years if we expect to keep them sound long term.

I will always advocate for slower starts! There is no horse on the planet that has matured 'early' - it is physically impossible. Some breeds, like the QH, have been bred to appear more mature at a younger age. This doesn't mean their skeletons are.

(Also, if you know me at all, you know that my young horse didn't just sit at home for the last 4 years. There are appropriate ways to work with youngsters to help build strength while at the same time making your job of actually starting them under saddle easy as pie 💁‍♀️)

Last minute trip to Kelowna this Sunday the 5th!
Only chance for probably another month that way.

July is very busy - I'm away the 8-18th and have limited availability the rest of the month.

Langley/Ladner trip July 22-24 (likely full already).

Next Kamloops day sometime beginning August.

I've been a bit slow at replies and scheduling lately and I apologize! It's been hair straight back lately, and I'm a one woman show 😅

July is shaping up to be a very busy time - please reach out asap if you'd like to book. I will be away the 8-17 and a couple more dates later in the month (to be confirmed still). I still have availability for the first week and, of course, haul ins to my place will likely get you seen faster 😊

On the little ferry en route home and feeling very grateful.
THANK YOU to everyone for making this another fabulous trip.

36 sessions in the last 5.5 days on this Kootenay loop and only 2 of those were new clients 🤯
Some with new horses but many familiar faces too and I'm so appreciative for the ongoing trust.

There will be one more trip later this season - make sure to get on my list early to ensure a spot (especially for newbies as existing clients receive priority for booking).

One of the kindest things we can do for our horses is to let them be (horses).

Let them have choice. Choice of where to eat, where to nap, where to sun bathe. We control so much of their lives already - allow them some agency in their day to day lives.

Let them forage. I have insulin resistant horses in my herd but they too, still have room to roam and browse, safe from lush grasses that are too rich for them. Even if you don't have a large parcel of land - take them for walks and find some edible plants that are safe to nibble. Trickle feed their hay and add straw if needed to ensure they have something to nibble on between feedings.

Let them forge friendships.
Horses find safety in a herd. The bonds they form are incredible and the day-to-day interactions with friends are meaningful and important - just as how community is integral for humans as well.

Let them move!!
Over different terrain, varied footing... let them use their bodies and keep their joints and digestive system well oiled. Movement is lubrication for every part of their system and they should have the ability to move around the other 23 hours a day when we're not with them.

The healthiest horses in my practice are the ones that have these freedoms. Let's make sure we're meeting their needs first before we go try to fix what's "broken" in them 😌
