I think we interrupt horses too much.

Not because we're unkind.

Because we're enthusiastic.

A horse finally lies down.

We walk over.

Two horses begin quietly grooming each other.

We reach for our phone.

One horse chooses to stand beside us.

We stroke them.

A curious horse starts investigating something.

We call their name.

A horse looks toward the horizon with complete attention...

and we ask for it back.

I don't think we mean to interrupt.

We're just excited to be part of whatever beautiful thing is unfolding.

I've caught myself doing it countless times.

Then one morning, I stopped.

Eclipse was standing quietly, watching something in the distance.

I have no idea what had captured his attention.

A bird.

A squirrel.

Another horse.

The wind.

For a moment I almost walked over to see if he wanted scratches.

Instead, I stayed where I was.

He never looked at me.

He never asked for anything.

After a while, whatever had held his attention passed, and he went back to grazing.

Nothing extraordinary happened.

Except perhaps this:

For once, I didn't interrupt a moment that didn't belong to me.

The more time I spend with horses, the more I wonder if love isn't always about joining in.

Sometimes it's about quietly protecting another being's experience from our own enthusiasm.

Maybe one of the greatest gifts we can offer those we love...

is the freedom to finish their own moments.

The mare hadn't moved in almost twenty minutes.

She wasn't sleeping.

She wasn't eating.

She wasn't looking for anyone.

She was simply standing in the morning sun.

One ear drifted toward another horse.

A bird landed somewhere behind her.

A breeze lifted a few strands of her mane.

That was enough.

Years ago, I might have watched her and thought,

"She must be bored."

Now I'm not so sure.

I wonder if "bored" is one of those words we invented because we've forgotten what it feels like to simply exist.

Humans have become remarkably uncomfortable with moments that aren't entertaining.

If nothing is happening, we reach for a phone.

Turn on music.

Start another project.

Find something to improve.

But the horses remind me that perhaps something is happening.

Perhaps we're just not practiced at noticing it.

The warmth of the sun.

The movement of the air.

The sounds of birds.

The presence of other horses nearby.

A world that's alive without asking us to perform in it.

I don't think that mare was waiting for her real life to begin.

I think she was already living it.

And standing there, watching her...

For a few quiet minutes...

So was I.

Understand the message behind the emotions

Understand the message behind the emotions

Sometimes anger isn't anger at all.

Sometimes it's fear.

Sometimes it's overwhelm.

Sometimes it's a child who doesn't yet have the words to explain what's happening inside them.

Sometimes it's an adult who's been carrying too much for too long.

Behaviour is often the language of a nervous system trying to stay safe.

The question isn't always...
"How do I stop this behaviour?"

Sometimes it's...
"What is this behaviour trying to tell me?"

That one question has the power to change relationships, classrooms, families and lives. 💚

“You cannot become who you are becoming
while carrying what was never properly mourned.
The grief is not a detour.
It is the road."

Horses help us by being active participants in learning situations. Because they are instinctive and natural, they mirror or reflect the emotions and energy of the people around them. Horses offer a genuine interpretation of reality, not as we wish it to be, but rather, as it is.

This workshop brings you together with horses in a fun, safe and unique experience. All of the exercises are done on the ground. No Horse experience necessary.

If this workshop isn't a fit for you, you might know someone who would benefit from it. Please share this with them!
