Let’s just be honest here.
The effects of perimenopause are very real on the body.
And it’s going to be more real and extreme for those experiencing trauma, crisis and grief in their lives.
It’s time we decide to educate ourselves so we can be a part of the solution and support Women of this demographic or more Women are going to step back and isolate themselves due to feeling misunderstood.
You might think “My Mom” or “My Wife” or “My Sister” all went through this and they were fine.
“That person looks okay and healthy, they must be fine”.
Yes 100%, if you have certain healthy routines and habits , that you may not get hit as hard with extreme symptoms.
Yes it does help.
But to a point.
The hormones are still going to change and cause struggles in certain areas.
For some it might be weight gain.
For others it might be more brain fog or extreme fatigue.
For some it might be more hot flashes.
For others it might be debilitating insomnia where you’re not sleeping well but you still have to get through your entire day without crashing mid day.
BUT…
When you mix trauma and crisis with this very critical time for a Women, it’s not just about these common symptoms that everyone knows about.
It goes deeper than that.
Anxiety worsens
Depression increases
Chronic Fatigue can turn into an adrenal crisis due to the body being over loaded with cortisol ( that the adrenals make) however, the crisis happens when even the adrenals can no longer supply the body with the cortisol it needs to get through a day or regulate proper levels at the right time of the day.
Are we all aware of how high cortisol hijacks the hippocampus ?
The part of the brain responsible for memory, proprioception ?
( the awareness of your body in time and space. Balance, stability, etc)
Short term stress does boost your memory, however long term stress impairs your memory and can even cause shrinkage of that region of the brain.
So, if a perimenopausal Women facing typical brain fog and memory issues now has to also face extreme stress, trauma or crisis… think about that for a second.
It’s making life harder for these Women already.
And they feel it, trust me.
It affects self esteem and confidence.
They have to work harder to carry out tasks that used to be easier on them mentally, which adds to their mental fatigue.
And if you are a Trainer or a Coach and working with this demographic, you truly need to take a step back and change your expectations.
Maybe you run a company and you notice an employee, who is of this demographic, has decreased work performance.
Maybe you are a husband and you notice your wife is more tired and less productive.
She isn’t able to carry the load she once carried in previous years.
Again, add crisis and trauma to this situation.
The physical limitations are also a struggle.
Do we need to get into how their muscles fatigue quicker?
Or how it takes them longer to recover from a workout or even stress in general?
Or how an intense workout can increase stress exacerbating all of the above things mentioned?
What are we doing to help build compassion, create safe places , and adjust our thinking and open up our mind to the reality that we have Women in our lives everyday, struggling with these very things.
If these things are making Women pull back from society, or not engage in activities because they feel incompetent to succeed, this is a barrier for them that may stop them from doing things they need to do to stay healthy or that can actual help them improve their symptoms.
One of The focuses in my training programs is to take this barrier down so Women feel accepted and confident enough to join a small group and work on their health goals without feeling like it’s too much for them, or that it might exacerbate preexisting perimenopausal symptoms.
It’s true, we need to change the way we work out.
We need to change what we eat and when.
We need to put more focus on stress management or even trauma and crisis management.
We need to be aware of how this changes not only our body but our brain.
And we need simple solutions because dealing with this is hard enough.
Others need to have patience with Women going through this, and allow them to take the lead so they can feel successful and in control.
This reduces their stress levels by boosting confidence so they don’t feel so bad about how this time in their life changes them so much.
Please like and share this post to let Women know , or those that work or live with them that they deserve to be heard, and that we are helping to spread these messages to more and more that still don’t understand.
