“Steya” means stealing and “a” means “not”. Asteya अस्तेय translates to non-stealing. It is the third yama यम; ethical conducts with the outside world, of which the yamas are the first limb of astanga yoga अष्टाङ्गयोग (eight limbs of yoga).

Asteya refers to non stealing of tangible items (physical objects) as well as intangible items such as other people’s ideas etc. It also teaches that we should not use something other than for the purpose that it was intended, and take only as much as we need, and not surplus.

By not stealing from others, we do not long for what they have, and instead value their time, presence, and attention. By not stealing from the earth, and the future, we respect and hold gratitude towards our surrounding environment and all living beings in it. By not stealing from ourselves, and shifting our focus towards ourselves and our own growth, we create an expansion and readiness for the possibilities that we want.

Observing asteya अस्तेय allows us to attract wealth and opportunities. Patanjali’s yoga sūtras, chapter 2, śloka (verse) 37 states:

“Asteyapratiṣṭhāyām sarvaratnopasthānam.”
अस्तेयप्रतिष्ठायां सर्वरत्नोपस्थानम्
Which translates to:
“To one established in non-stealing, all wealth comes.”

Directing energy inward, rather than outward, creates space for abundance.

Many everyday ingredients, especially spices, contain properties that support digestion, immunity, the respiratory system, gut health, lower inflammation, calm the nervous system and much more.

Cooking with spices (not dry but with a healthy fat) on a regular basis is a great way to reap benefits as preventive action. Your kitchen can be your first line of defence. Only a little is needed. There are also ways of using spices as home remedies for specific ailments but that’s for another post!

There are so many more foods, spices, and herbs on top of those listed in this post. You just need to know what you have and how to use it. Always use spices and foods according to the season, your Agni (digestive capacity), your prakriti and your vikriti.

No trends, just time tested tools. 🫚🪴

Eat fruit alone unless it is cooked. Eating fruit with other foods is considered viruddhāhāra/ विरुद्धाहार; an incompatible food combination in āyurveda. Fruit digests much faster than other foods. When it has sit and wait to be digested with other foods, it’s starts to putrefy and cause toxins in the gut. This can be seen as bloating, excess gas and irregular elimination.

Wait one hour before and two hours after other foods to eat fruit.

Try it out and see how it makes you feel. 🍓🫐🍎✨

Āmalakī, आमलकी, amla, or the Indian gooseberry is an important and powerful herb in āyurveda with a wide array of healing capabilities. It is sometimes also referred to as ‘dhātrī’ धात्री meaning ‘that which supports the bodily tissues’.

Āmalakī is cooling and contains five out of the six tastes (the salty taste is excluded), with its main taste being sour. “Amla” translates to sour.

It pacifies all three doshas, especially pitta. It is a rasāyana रसायन in Āyurvedic medicine which means it is a rejuvenating herb that nourishes all seven dhātus (bodily tissues). It can be prepared fresh, as a juice, a powder, a leyham (herbal jam), or included as an ingredient in other āyurvedic formulation types.

Because of its high vitamin C content, amla is one of the best herbs for supporting the immune system. It is an ingredient in many āyurvedic formulations and preparations. Some of its benefits include stabilizing blood sugar levels in diabetes, lowering cholesterol, enhancing digestion & elimination, supporting a healthy respiratory system, nourishing the heart, helping with liver disorders, relieving acidity, strengthening the bones, teeth, and nails, and promoting calmness & clarity of the mind. It is also popularly used to nourish & support healthy hair and prevent greys, so it is often used as a hair oil for these purposes.

Āmalakī trees grow in so many places in India, and I would also so often see Amla fruits being sold at the markets. 💚

Amla has so many benefits but remember that it needs to be used in the right way, in the right formulation, paired with the right herbs & carrier, and taken at the right time and for the correct duration. And there could be some contraindications. For these reasons, it is always recommended to consult an Āyurvedic Practitioner if you want to take it (or any other herb or formulation) to help with a specific disorder/ imbalance to maximize your benefits from it/ them.

Āyurveda & yoga are sister sciences. Āyurveda prepares the body for yogic practices by alleviating physical and mental diseases. Yoga provides a path for spiritual development, which in turn can also relieve imbalances in the body & mind. The ultimate goal of both sciences is self-realization. Prāna links the two.

Any movement or controlled intake of prāna and its intensity and degree of exertion impacts the energy of the body and mind. This has either a balancing or unbalancing effect on each one of the doshas.

🌬️ Vāta वात thrives on grounding, slow, steady, strengthening practices.

🔥 Pitta पित्त is balanced through cooling, gentle, relaxing, and surrender type practices.

🌏 Kapha कफ benefits from energizing, stimulating, moving, and lightening practices.

Since the doshas are always fluctuating, either by a little or a lot depending on the person, their activities, time of day and time of year, the way in which yoga is practiced can be used to either bring a dosha back into balance or maintain its equilibrium. This is why yoga can form important part of an āyurvedic treatment plan (alongside other protocols) and yoga was traditionally practiced according to each individual’s needs.

An Āyurvedic practitioner can advise on the best yoga practices for you and when and how to adapt according to changing circumstances. 🧘🏻‍♀️

Āsana practice doesn’t always have to be perfect. Moving at your own pace, with your own breath, synchronizing movement and breath is what makes the practice powerful. We make improvements everyday, and at the same time, the mind focuses a little more. 💫

Aparjita, commonly known as butterfly pea, and similar to shankhapushpi, is a medicinal herb used in Āyurvedic medicine. It has a cooling energy, a calming effect, and pacifies all three doshas. It is mainly used as a brain tonic to improve intelligence, memory, and concentration. I saw it growing abundantly in Kerala 💙

Simply choosing whole foods that are fresh is one of the best and most effective things we can do to stay in balance.

Āyurveda teaches that processed foods and chemical components that have been isolated from their whole confuse Agni (digestive capacity) so the body doesn’t know how to break them down. Instead, foods that remain mostly the way that nature has given them to us are a lot of easier for the body to break down, absorb and assimilate, and be used as fuel and nourishment. 🫐🥦🥕
