Oh the joys of uncontrolled blood sugars. About a month ago I had an appointment with my diabetes nurse. My blood sugars were so good we didn't have to make any changes. Ever since then they have been wacky. Going low after administering the right amount of insulin. Then going high because I over corrected with the snack. This has been a roller coaster ride for a few weeks until I decided to make some changes. I changed my breakfast ratio from a 1:6.5 to now 1:10. This is a big difference in how much insulin I get.
Just a little snapshot of what a diabetics life can be like.

I wore blue today because it is World Diabetes Day! It was created in 1991. However, it wasn't official until 2006. World Diabetes Day is November 14 because this was the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting. He was one of the founders of insulin.
This is the DiaDigits from someone diagnosed in 2011.

November is diabetes month! And World Diabetes Day is November 14. Blue is the color for diabetes. It reflects the sky that unites all nations and is the color of the United Nations flag. A blue circle is the universal sign for diabetes.
There is a DiaDigits Calculator that estimates the time spent on diabetes. I did the calculations and have attached my results as an image.

Myth: only overweight people get diabetes. There are two common types of diabetes, and most people do not differentiate between them. Type 1, the type we are battling, has nothing to do with weight. As well, type 2 can be caused by other factors instead of weight. Therefore, there are people of all shapes and sizes who may have diabetes.

Transferring to the pump was the best thing that I could have done. I have to say that some of the alarms can get annoying but overall it has changed my (and my sisters) life for the better. With the pump we have better control of our blood sugars. This is due to multiple reasons.
First: the pump only uses short acting insulin. Therefore, instead of giving insulin at meal times with short acting, and once or twice a day with long acting, now we get insulin every hour and with our meal times. There is a huge benefit for this; that is because we can figure out how much insulin we need for each hour. When we used long acting insulin we couldn't do this because we gave a big amount every 12 to 24 hours.
Second: we have the option of suspending our pump which will stop all delivery of insulin. This is helpful when our sugar is going low, or if we are performing a high energy activity.
Third: when giving our meal boluses, we also have the option of a dual or Square wave bolus. A dual wave bolus is useful when you want to give some insulin immediately and the rest spread over a longer time. A square wave bolus administers the needed insulin evenly over a period of time.
Fourth: we can place our pump under temp target, which will change our blood glucose target to 8.0 instead of 4.0. This allows our pump to give less insulin.
Fifth: our pump has the awesome function of giving less insulin based on our blood glucose levels. This option is only available when it is on auto mode and the person is wearing a sensor. This way the pump can read the number from the sensor and adjust the insulin levels based on the reading.
Six: on auto mode our pump also has the option of giving alerts (before low, on low, before high, on high) that can help us regulate our levels. If our pump alerts us that we are going low, we can already correct before it goes low, and the same goes for when our pump alerts us that we are going high. This results in less lows and highs.

I would like to talk about a little bit of history, while also teaching you something that could potentially save a life. glucagon was 'accidentally' discovered during the research for a cure for diabetes. When dogs, who had their pancreas taken out, were given glucagon, their sugars went higher. Therefore, glucagon is a cure for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). There are two types of glucagon; injectable glucagon or the nasal glucagon.
Glucagon is only used in cases of a severe low. Symptoms of a severe low may include the following:
- being unresponsive or unconscious
- having a seizure
- being so uncooperative that you can't give juice or sugar by mouth
To administer glucagon follow these instructions:
- nasal glucagon: remove covering, hold the device between thumb and fingers, insert the tip until your fingers touch the outside of their nose, push the plunger all the way in - injectable glucagon: inject the liquid from the syringe into the vial of dry powder, roll the vial to dissolve the powder, draw the liquid back into the syringe, then inject into outer mid thigh (it is okay to go through clothing).
