Transferring to the pump was the best thing that I could have done. I have to say that some of the alarms can get annoying but overall it has changed my (and my sisters) life for the better. With the pump we have better control of our blood sugars. This is due to multiple reasons.
First: the pump only uses short acting insulin. Therefore, instead of giving insulin at meal times with short acting, and once or twice a day with long acting, now we get insulin every hour and with our meal times. There is a huge benefit for this; that is because we can figure out how much insulin we need for each hour. When we used long acting insulin we couldn't do this because we gave a big amount every 12 to 24 hours.
Second: we have the option of suspending our pump which will stop all delivery of insulin. This is helpful when our sugar is going low, or if we are performing a high energy activity.
Third: when giving our meal boluses, we also have the option of a dual or Square wave bolus. A dual wave bolus is useful when you want to give some insulin immediately and the rest spread over a longer time. A square wave bolus administers the needed insulin evenly over a period of time.
Fourth: we can place our pump under temp target, which will change our blood glucose target to 8.0 instead of 4.0. This allows our pump to give less insulin.
Fifth: our pump has the awesome function of giving less insulin based on our blood glucose levels. This option is only available when it is on auto mode and the person is wearing a sensor. This way the pump can read the number from the sensor and adjust the insulin levels based on the reading.
Six: on auto mode our pump also has the option of giving alerts (before low, on low, before high, on high) that can help us regulate our levels. If our pump alerts us that we are going low, we can already correct before it goes low, and the same goes for when our pump alerts us that we are going high. This results in less lows and highs.
