Happy Saturday! ๐Ÿ’ƒ

For June, the only extra day off is the 19th

Also, donโ€™t forget, I am now back to working 9am-5pm (most likely until October/November), still Monday to Friday, but feel free to ask about weekends as I do work some!

๐Ÿ“ฃ If you know of anyone requiring potty breaks/walks, I am also accepting new clients for regular care!

One thing that gets discussed a LOT in canine nutrition circles is AGEs.

AGEs = ๐—”๐—ฑ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—š๐—น๐˜†๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜€

These compounds form during high heat processing:
โ€ข extrusion (most kibble)
โ€ข frying
โ€ข roasting
โ€ข heavy browning

Itโ€™s part of the same chemistry that creates:
โ€ข crispy food
โ€ข toasted bread
โ€ข grill marks
โ€ข browned meat

This is one reason some companies market:
โ€ข oven baked kibble
โ€ข air dried food
โ€ข dehydrated diets

These methods are generally lower heat than traditional extrusion and may produce fewer AGEs and less oxidation.

This does NOT mean:
โ€ข kibble is poison
โ€ข every dog on kibble will become sick
โ€ข raw is automatically perfect
โ€ข you need to panic if kibble is what works for your family

Howeverโ€ฆ

I DO think AGEs and heavy processing probably matter more in:
โ€ข chronically inflamed dogs
โ€ข seniors
โ€ข dogs with neurological disease
โ€ข chronic skin/allergy dogs
โ€ข kidney disease
โ€ข obesity/metabolic dysfunction
โ€ข dogs eating the exact same ultra-processed food for years and years

AGEs are associated with:
โ€ข oxidative stress
โ€ข inflammation
โ€ข tissue stiffness
โ€ข nerve damage
โ€ข vascular stress
โ€ข accelerated aging processes

And dogs eating kibble daily for life likely have a much more repetitive AGE exposure pattern than humans do.

Honestly? Small changes matter.

Even adding:
โ€ข fresh foods
โ€ข berries
โ€ข lightly cooked meat
โ€ข eggs
โ€ข sardines
โ€ข antioxidant-rich foods
โ€ข hydration support

โ€ฆmay help support overall terrain and reduce oxidative burden.

And donโ€™t underestimate lifestyle:
โ€ข appropriate exercise
โ€ข outside time/sunlight
โ€ข stress reduction
โ€ข healthy body weight
โ€ข clean water
โ€ข sleep/rest
โ€ข digestion support

These things influence inflammation and metabolic health too.

I donโ€™t think this topic should create fear.

But I DO think itโ€™s worth understanding that:
food processing changes biology.

And while we canโ€™t eliminate every modern stressorโ€ฆ we CAN often improve terrain with thoughtful upgrades instead of perfectionism.

Being the spunky old guy that he is, he had the zoomies before this and even launched himself onto the couch with a flying leap ๐Ÿ˜‚

His TCM herbs really seem to be helping, and Iโ€™m honestly so glad I found something that works for him because he is INCREDIBLY sensitive. I definitely understand the value of Western herbs, but with himโ€ฆ I just couldnโ€™t quite get the balance right lol. Even tiny doses would sometimes be too much.

So lately, Iโ€™ve been working hard learning more about TCM herbs and traditional formulas, hoping to make herb selection, dosing, and overall support a little easier for my clients too. I used to feel pretty intimidated by TCM herbalism, but Iโ€™m really happy I finally made the leap into learning it more deeply.

His ears have also been doing really well latelyโ€ฆ but we shall see ๐Ÿคž

Althoughโ€ฆ I may have been sharing a little too much bologna with him lately, so I am half expecting a flare ๐Ÿ˜‚

Picky dog problemsโ€ฆ sometimes fed really is best!

Another video of dramatic dogs! ๐Ÿ˜…

Every morning I take the dogs to the park, let them do their business, and then we head into the trails for our walk. There are no garbage cans back there.

The city recently put those big water bags around some of the young trees they planted last fall

Wellโ€ฆ Jazz was NOT a fan. Neither was Rhythm ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

Jazz spotted one from a distance and immediately got suspicious. Very cautious. Very concerned. So naturally, I walked up to it trying to show her it was okay while she stared at me like I was approaching an alien life form.

Thankfully Treble stepped in to save the day ๐Ÿ˜… He walked right up like, โ€œWhat exactly is the issue here?โ€

Heโ€™s such a confident dog, and honestly the breed tends to be that way in general. I love how he always comes over looking slightly confused by all the drama.

Meanwhile Jazz is still side-eyeing the tree bags like they might move at any second

Why are dogs so dramatic? LOL!

A little nerdy cat nutrition post today

A lot of people in raw feeding spaces know that cats LOVE fish

โ€ฆbut one thing that sometimes gets missed is that certain raw fish contain an enzyme called ๐—ง๐—›๐—œ๐—”๐— ๐—œ๐—ก๐—”๐—ฆ๐—˜.

And cats are actually VERY sensitive to low B1 levels.

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ is important for:
โ€ข nervous system function
โ€ข brain health
โ€ข energy metabolism
โ€ข appetite
โ€ข neurological signalling

So when large amounts of raw fish are fed regularly โ€” especially as a major part of the diet โ€” this can potentially contribute to thiamine deficiency over time.

โ€ข poor appetite
โ€ข vomiting
โ€ข weakness
โ€ข wobbliness
โ€ข neurological signs
โ€ข seizures in severe cases

Now to be clear

This does NOT mean fish is bad!

And it doesnโ€™t mean every cat eating a sardine is doomedโ€ฆ

Some fish are higher in thiaminase than others, and cooking also changes enzyme activity.

This is one reason why balanced formulation matters in both homemade and raw feeding โ€” especially for cats, because cats are NOT tiny dogs nutritionally ๐Ÿ˜…

Raw feeding isnโ€™t just:
โ€œThrow meat in bowlโ€

Cats have very specific nutrient requirements, and small imbalances over time can matter more than people realize.

Fish can absolutely fit into a dietโ€ฆ but understanding the details matters too ๐Ÿˆโœจ

This is one of those supplements that sits in a really interesting โ€œmiddle zoneโ€ between:
โ€ข brain health
โ€ข stress physiology
โ€ข nervous system regulation
โ€ข cognition
โ€ข and behaviour.

Most people hear about phosphatidylserine (PS) as a โ€œcortisol lowering supplementโ€โ€ฆ

BUTโ€ฆ

itโ€™s actually much more nuanced than that ๐Ÿ‘€

PS is a phospholipid naturally found in cell membranes, especially in the brain and nervous system.

Think of it like part of the โ€œcommunication layerโ€ of the cell.

It helps support:
โ€ข cell signalling
โ€ข neurotransmitter communication
โ€ข membrane fluidity
โ€ข stress signalling
โ€ข cognitive function
โ€ข nervous system resilience

Which is why it sometimes gets used in dogs for:
โ€ข separation anxiety
โ€ข hypervigilance
โ€ข cognitive decline
โ€ข โ€œsundowningโ€
โ€ข stress reactivity
โ€ข poor recovery after stress
โ€ข nervous system dysregulation
โ€ข senior dogs
โ€ข dogs with chronically elevated stress responses

PS is NOT usually a sedative.

Some dogs become calmer and more regulated on itโ€ฆ

while others may:
โ€ข seem sleepy
โ€ข become restless
โ€ข get digestive upset
โ€ข act emotionally โ€œflatโ€
โ€ข or show almost no noticeable change.

Thatโ€™s because โ€œanxietyโ€ in dogs can come from MANY different places:
โ€ข pain
โ€ข gut discomfort
โ€ข cognitive decline
โ€ข trauma/imprinting
โ€ข nervous system overload
โ€ข lack of safety signalling
โ€ข poor sleep
โ€ข chronic stress
โ€ข inflammation
โ€ข environmental stressors
โ€ข routine disruption
โ€ข aging changes

So PS is often better viewed as a โ€œregulation supportโ€ rather than a knockout calming aid.

There really is NOT a universally agreed veterinary dosing standard yet.

A lot of use is based on practitioner experience and the individual dog.

From what Iโ€™ve seen:
โ€ข small dogs often start around 25โ€“50 mg/day
โ€ข medium dogs around 50โ€“100 mg/day
โ€ข large dogs around 100โ€“200 mg/day

Some practitioners also use roughly:
5 mg/kg depending on the dog and the goal.

Personally?

I would start LOW in sensitive dogs and slowly build upward if needed

Depending on the dog and the situation, PS is sometimes paired with:
L-theanine
โ€ข magnesium
โ€ข calming mushroom blends
โ€ข melatonin
โ€ข colostrum
โ€ข calming herbs
โ€ข behavioural work
โ€ข routine restructuring
โ€ข vagal/nervous system support

Because again

the goal is often nervous system regulation and resilience, NOT just sedation.

Some dogs may experience:
โ€ข loose stool
โ€ข reduced appetite
โ€ข fatigue
โ€ข restlessness
โ€ข emotional dullness/flattening
โ€ข changes in sleep patterns

And honestly

if a dog has severe separation anxiety or panic behaviours, PS alone is unlikely to โ€œfixโ€ the root issue.

Those dogs often need:
โ€ข behavioural support
โ€ข environmental changes
โ€ข safety-building
โ€ข routine work
โ€ข nervous system regulation
โ€ข pain assessment
โ€ข and sometimes medication support too.

PS is a really interesting supplement because it sits at the crossroads of:
brain health, stress physiology, neurochemistry, and behaviour.

For the RIGHT dog, it may help support a calmer, more resilient nervous system

but like many neuro-supportive supplementsโ€ฆ itโ€™s definitely NOT one-size-fits-all.

A lot of people travel with their pups, especially during this time of the year ๐Ÿ˜Š

One thing I find really interesting about motion sickness in dogs is that not all dogs experience it the same way.

Some dogs:
โ€ข drool
โ€ข vomit
โ€ข look pale and miserable

Others:
โ€ข panic BEFORE getting in the vehicle
โ€ข shake
โ€ข pant
โ€ข pace
โ€ข scream
โ€ข refuse to load up

And some dogs seem to have BOTH:
โ€ข nausea

AND

โ€ข anxiety layered together ๐Ÿ˜ญ

This is why I personally think itโ€™s important to look at the WHOLE pattern, not just:
โ€œthe dog gets carsickโ€

Especially when looking at things like:
โ€ข herbs
โ€ข homeopathy
โ€ข nervous system support
โ€ข and training approaches.

Classic motion sickness remedy. Think:
dizzy, nauseous, drooly, miserable dogs that seem overwhelmed by movement itself.

More anticipatory anxiety.
Dogs that panic BEFORE the car ride even starts.

Interesting remedy for dogs fearful of downward motion, drops, braking, or movement transitions.

More shutdown/freeze response.
Shaky, weak, overwhelmed dogs.

Acute panic and terror.
Very sudden intense fear responses.

Classic severe nausea picture:
cold, pale, drooly, nauseous dogs.

Now obviouslyโ€ฆ homeopathy is individualized, and this is NOT meant to be a:
โ€œthis remedy for this conditionโ€ post ๐Ÿ˜…

But I think itโ€™s fascinating how differently dogs can experience the same situation.

Some dogs truly do seem more:
โ€ข vestibular sensitive
โ€ข nausea-prone
โ€ข autonomically reactive
โ€ข stress sensitive

And after repeated bad experiences, the nervous system can start associating:
car = nausea/stress ๐Ÿ˜ญ

So now you may have:
โ€ข motion sickness
PLUS
โ€ข anticipatory fear.

โ€ข flower essences
โ€ข homeopathy
โ€ข calming support
โ€ข nervous system regulation

BUTโ€ฆ

slow exposure, confidence building, and training are often still incredibly important too!

Sometimes we need to support BOTH:
โ€ข the physiology
AND
โ€ข the emotional experience around the vehicle.

Not all motion sickness patterns are the same.

Some dogs are:
โ€ข nauseous
โ€ข fearful
โ€ข vestibular sensitive
โ€ข overstimulated
โ€ข stress reactive
โ€ข or a mix of all of the above ๐Ÿ˜‚

Which is why individualized support often works best

๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ•One combo that has become increasingly popular in both human and canine wellness spaces is...

One combo that has become increasingly popular in both human and canine wellness spaces is:

โ€ฆand honestly, the mechanisms behind it are pretty fascinating.

Why?

Because both may influence parts of the:
โ€ข nervous system
โ€ข immune system
โ€ข inflammation pathways
โ€ข and even the gut-brain axis

๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ปโ€™๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ is often discussed for:
โ€ข cognitive support
โ€ข aging brains
โ€ข nerve support
โ€ข neuroplasticity
โ€ข gut-immune signalling

While ๐—–๐—•๐—— is commonly used for:
โ€ข calming support
โ€ข inflammatory balance
โ€ข discomfort support
โ€ข nervous system regulation
โ€ข stress resilience

And the cool part?

The gut and brain are CONSTANTLY communicating through:
โ€ข the vagus nerve
โ€ข immune messengers
โ€ข neurotransmitters
โ€ข the microbiome
โ€ข inflammatory signalling

So when dogs struggle with things like:
โ€ข stress
โ€ข reactivity
โ€ข aging
โ€ข cognitive decline
โ€ข inflammatory terrain
โ€ข nervous system dysregulation

โ€ฆpeople often start exploring tools that support BOTH the nervous system and the body as a whole.

Some dogs do amazing with this combo.

Others may become:
โ€ข sleepy
โ€ข overstimulated
โ€ข vocal
โ€ข restless
โ€ข or develop GI upset

Especially if:
โ€ข doses are too high
โ€ข extracts are very potent
โ€ข the dog is sensitive
โ€ข or too many things are introduced at once

This is why I always recommend:
โ€ข starting LOW
โ€ข introducing one thing at a time
โ€ข and watching the individual dog carefully

Also important:
These tools are not magic cures!

A stressed nervous system may ALSO need:
โ€ข sleep support
โ€ข pain management
โ€ข digestion support
โ€ข exercise
โ€ข enrichment
โ€ข safety
โ€ข routine
โ€ข outdoor time
โ€ข proper nutrition

Because biology is never just one pathway ๐Ÿ˜Š
