You have Permission.

I think a lot of family caregivers need to hear this.
You have permission to:
Say NO.
Set a boundary.
Admit your exhausted.
Ask for help.
Take a day off.
Have some guilt free moments.

More than all of that, You have permission to show yourself the same level of care and dedication you give to your family member.

Happy Saturday!
🌼
I don't normally bring my phone with me on my walks.
I try to break away from the screen as much as I can.

I was glad that I had it with me this morning, if only to capture this beautiful bloom and be reminded that there is still a little summer left!

I may work independently as a Registered Nurse in my own practice, but I still need a team of people to support me.

When I need new photos for marketing, my website (www.KarenLake.ca) and social media, my "go to" photographer is Lucenda Richard Photo.

She has taken all of these photos over the last 10 years and has been instrumental in helping me to tell my story and share my messages.
It feels good to have someone like Lucenda on my team.
Might be time for another photo session Lucenda Lee!

I don't practice gratitude, OR encourage Family Caregivers to because it is trendy or the new thing to do.

This is a practice that is based on Science, and it really works.

Consistently giving thanks can improve your mental and physical health, increase your ability to empathize, reduce frustration and allow you to sleep better.
Sounds good to me!

So tell me, what are you thankful for today?

It's a NEW Month (how is it September already?!) and lots of NEW followers, so I think it is time for an Introduction.
I'm Karen Lake and I get the privilege of hosting and holding space for all of you, here on my page.
As a Registered Nurse, I am a Caregiving Consultant and Care Navigator, working in my independent practice since 2016.
You can check it out here: www.karenlake.ca

I also host a FREE on line group for Caregivers.
Come join me in the safe company of others, going through something similar in The I-CARE ❤ Community.

I have a passion for supporting, guiding, and directing family members to be the best they can be in their caregiving role.
It is my goal to help today's families make informed choices, to be prepared and to successfully navigate the complex issues of caring for their family member.

I'm a wife, a proud mother to 2 young men, an animal lover, a sister, a trusted friend and daughter to my amazing Mom.

I love morning coffee, reading, learning, baking on rainy days and walking in nature.

I grew up in New Brunswick, moved away to explore opportunities in Texas, Florida and Nova Scotia, but I love New Brunswick and my home is now in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
I used to work in the Hospital; Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedics, General Medicine/General Surgery and the Burn Unit but...

I found my real passion when I started to care for people in the Community.
Here I got to know my patients on a more personal level and got to meet the family members who took care of them.

They call me the "Caregiver of the Caregivers", and I love that.
Here's to all you hardworking Family Caregivers out there, wishing you a safe and beautiful Fall! (but lets first enjoy these last few weeks of summer)

We ALL have the responsibility to plan for our Long Term Care.
That's me, you, your partner and yes...Our Parents!

Everyday, I see and hear Family Caregivers struggling, researching, contemplating and considering what their parents need as they age; pulling their hair out trying to pull it all together, usually in a time of crisis.

We are all aging.
We all need to consider and have conversations about how we see our last years and what we want that to look like.

I'll say it again...
And say it with me:
We ALL have the responsibility to plan our Long Term Care.

I have always loved this verse from former first lady, Rosalynn Carter.
It really shows us just how many different kinds of Caregivers there are.

Whether you are new to all of this and want to learn more...
Maybe you are knee deep in caregiving and looking for people that understand what you are going through...
Perhaps your caregiving journey is done and you want to be able to share all of the lessons that caring for another has brought to you?

We welcome all Family Caregivers to The I-CARE ❤ Community.
A beautiful private and respectful place for you to be surrounded with support; a space to be celebrated for the important work that you are doing.

I love this quote:
"Everyday may not be good but there is something good in every day".
🌼
This really relates to Family Caregivers, doesn't it?

Caring for others can be hard.
It can test our patience.
It often calls on us to dig deep to find the good.

This beautiful bloom at my back door reminds me that there is still lots of summer left.

How thankful are we be to have lived in a world that included Dolly Parton.
Known for her skilled songwriting, entertaining, business acumen, and philanthropy, did you also know that she was a Family Caregiver to her husband?

Dolly was the primary caregiver for her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean.
Carl died in March 2025 at 82.
In the months that followed, Dolly said publicly that while caring for Carl, she let her own health go; skipped appointments, ignored warning signs and ran on empty.
She died roughly 17 months after he did.

This is what often happens with Family Caregivers.

There are numerous ways that we can all aspire to be more like Dolly but please, love yourself enough to take care of your own health, too.
🖤

🎼In honor of her, feel free to drop your favorite Dolly song down in the comments.
