Can Eating an Antioxidant-Rich Diet Help Protect You from Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. If something as inexpensive and simple as dietary changes could reduce the risk, that would be a potentially important finding.

This just published study looked into the association between antioxidants in the diet and cervical cancer among American women.

The researchers calculated each person's Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI). The higher the CDAI score, the higher the amount of antioxidants in the diet. The index measured vitamins A, C and E, carotenoids, zinc and selenium.
What they discovered is promising. For every one-unit increase in CDAI, rates of cervical cancer dropped by 11.4%. Women with the most antioxidant-rich diets had a significantly lower prevalence of cervical cancer (55.8%) than women with the least.

This study hints that eating a healthier diet that provides more antioxidants could play a role in preventing cervical cancer.

Promising New Herbal Help for Kids with ADHD

ADHD is surprisingly common, and it can be very disruptive to your child’s life. A just published study has discovered promising new herbal help.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that typically starts in childhood. Kids with ADHD struggle with inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. It can make school difficult and make social and family life challenging.

Amazingly, 7-8% of children aged 3-12 and 5-6% of adolescents have ADHD. That’s a lot of kids potentially on a lot of medication. A safe, natural alternative would be very welcome.

There is tons of research on the herb ashwagandha for adults, including for stress, anxiety insomnia and more. But there has not yet been a lot of research on ashwagandha for kids, including kids with ADHD. This new study set out to address that.

The double-blind study included 58 children between the ages of 6 and 12 who had mild ADHD. Half of the kids were given a placebo; half were given 150mg of ashwagandha root extract standardized to approximately 5% withanolides twice a day. The study lasted for 8 weeks.

Ashwagandha’s results were impressive. On the ADHD Rating Scale, scores for inattention failed to improve at all on placebo while they improved significantly on ashwagandha. The difference between the results was significant. The same was true for scores of hyperactivity. Scores improved only in the ashwagandha group and were significant. Total ADHD scores were significantly more improved in the ashwagandha group.

Next the researchers looked at the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-2 (BRIEF-2) scale. Many of the behavioural features of ADHD, including inattention, impulsiveness, memory deficits and difficulty at school are related to executive function. They found that behaviour regulation improved only in the ashwagandha group and that the difference was significant. Emotion regulation also improved significantly in the ashwagandha group and not at all on the placebo, and, once again, the difference was significant.

Finally, sleep disturbances and anxiety both improved significantly more with ashwagandha. On the PROMIS scale total score, which, in addition to sleep and anxiety, includes quality of life, improvement with ashwagandha was significantly better.

Importantly when considering treatments for children, the ashwagandha was safe. The ashwagandha was as safe as the placebo: there were no clinically relevant hematological or biochemical changes or changes in laboratory markers, including liver, renal, hematological, and lipid status.

This study shows that ashwagandha safely and significantly improves ADHD symptoms, executive function, sleep, anxiety and quality of life in children with mild ADHD.

Summer's winding down, and let's be honest, so is our routine. Time for a little reset before the fall rush hits.

Here are a few tips on where to start:

💧 Hydrate first.
Swap that second coffee for herbal tea or add electrolytes to your water

🌾 Add fibre back in.
Ground flax, psyllium, or a fibre-rich cereal at breakfast keeps things moving (literally)

🛒 Restock the pantry.
Grab your fall staples: bulk grains, soups, and seasonal teas are back on our shelves

📅 Meal prep Sunday.
Batch-cook a soup or grain bowl base so weeknights feel less chaotic

Small resets now may make for a smoother September for the whole family. 🍁

Come grab what you need to get back on track. We've gotcha covered from pantry to cup! ☕

🌕 Tonight, the moon is putting on one of her loveliest late-summer shows.

August’s full Sturgeon Moon will drift into Earth’s shadow, creating a deep partial lunar eclipse. At its peak, about 96% of the moon will be shadowed, possibly glowing a beautiful deep red or coppery orange.

Here's a little timeline for those who want to view:

✨ Partial eclipse begins: 11:33 p.m. ADT
🌒 Maximum eclipse: 1:12 a.m. ADT
🌕 Full moon peaks: approximately 1:18 a.m. ADT
✨ Partial eclipse ends: 2:51 a.m. ADT

No special glasses are needed for a lunar eclipse, just a comfortable place to look up, perhaps a warm mug in your hands, and a willingness to stay awake a little past bedtime.

Not every nourishing moment comes from a bottle, a jar, or a garden. Sometimes it comes from standing quietly beneath the night sky and remembering how wonderfully big the world is. 💛

Will you be staying up to watch?

A few of us are going to try, or at least pop out for a quick peek!
