Can your DNA actually change? 🧬
For the most part, the DNA sequence you’re born with stays the same.
But here’s where it gets interesting: how some of your genes are expressed can change.
This is where epigenetics comes in. Think of your DNA as the instructions, while epigenetic processes help influence which instructions are more or less active.
Things like nutrition, sleep, stress, physical activity, ageing and environmental exposures can all interact with these processes.
So when we talk about supporting your health based on your genetics, the goal isn’t to “change your DNA.”
It’s to better understand the genetic variations you already have and use that information alongside your lifestyle, health history and other relevant data to make more personalised decisions.
Your genes can provide useful clues.
But they’re one piece of a much bigger health picture.
That’s one of the reasons I use functional genomics in my work: not to predict your future, but to add another layer of context when looking at your health and wellness.
