Important Questions to Ask Your Footcare Nurse 👣
including pedicures and nail techs
Your feet deserve safe, professional care. Before booking a footcare appointment, don’t be afraid to ask questions about your provider’s training, experience, and infection-control practices.
Some important questions include:
✅ What training and qualifications do you have in advanced footcare?
✅ How are your instruments cleaned and sterilized?
✅ Are reusable instruments processed using an ultrasonic cleaner and medical-grade autoclave?
✅ Are instruments individually packaged and sealed before/after sterilization?
✅ How do you verify that your sterilization equipment is working properly?
✅ Do you use biological indicator (spore) testing to monitor sterilization?
✅ How are treatment areas cleaned and disinfected between appointments?
✅ Are you trained to recognize concerns such as poor circulation, neuropathy, wounds, infections, or changes that may require a referral?
⚠️ Why does this matter?
If equipment is not properly cleaned, disinfected, or sterilized between clients, microorganisms may remain on instruments and could potentially be transferred from one person to another.
Depending on the type of exposure and the condition being treated, poor infection-control practices may increase the risk of:
🦠 Bacterial infections, including difficult-to-treat bacteria such as MRSA
🍄 Fungal infections, including athlete’s foot and nail fungus
🦠 Viral infections, including plantar warts
🩸 Blood-borne infections may also be a concern when instruments are contaminated with blood and are not properly reprocessed.
The risk is not the same in every situation, but proper cleaning and sterilization are essential because instruments can carry biological material that is not always visible. Equipment that looks clean is not automatically disinfected or sterile.
WELL At Grand Soles Footcare, infection prevention and client safety are a priority. Our reusable instruments are thoroughly cleaned, processed using an ultrasonic cleaner, packaged, and sterilized in a medical-grade autoclave, with sterilization monitoring and documentation by biological indicator (spore) testing to monitor sterilization!!!
