Glad to find this article that really resonates with our philosophy around how we talk about birth and expectations. Birth can be messy, hard, long, and entirely unlike what we’d imagined it would be. What we as your doulas value so much is supporting you through whatever it ends up looking like and however it feels— before, during and after the big day.

“In our eyes, birth has the ability to be MORE than beautiful - it can be transformational. Transformation can bring wisdom, challenge, growth, intensity, meaning, and so much more.”

Time for another . Learn why we avoid using the phrase “birth is beautiful.”

If you value midwifery care in Ontario and believe our government should do the same, please add your name to this petition!

"Doug Ford's government has revoked current and future funding for the College of Midwives of Ontario, the regulatory body that oversees more than 900 midwives and has had government support for 25 years.

"The Ford government’s surprise elimination of all funding for the College of Midwives of Ontario is a huge step backward, and does nothing to help women, parents and babies,” said France Gélinas, the NDP’s health critic and the MPP for Nickel Belt. “The Ford government is demonstrating contempt for the profession. Mothers have a right to count on not only the support of a midwife, but also that their midwife has the backing of a professional regulatory body."

Me first thing in the morning: Good morning, baby. How did you sleep? Did you have the sweetest dreams? Gosh, I love you so much.

Me ten minutes later: HURRY UP. I DON’T KNOW WHERE YOUR SHOES ARE. THEY ARE NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY, BUT YOU’D BETTER FIND THEM
AND YOU’D BETTER FIND THEM FAST, OR ELSE. I SWEAR...NO. NO, YOU MAY NOT HAVE COOKIES FOR BREAKFAST. YOU GET WHAT YOU GET. I AM A PERSON, NOT A BREAKFAST BUFFET.
IT IS TIME FOR SCHOOL THOUGH. STOP MOVING IN SLOTH MODE AND GOOOOOOO!

Me ten minutes later: Bye, honey. Have a great day at school. I can’t wait to pick you up. HURRY AND GET OUT OF THE CAR. PEOPLE BEHIND US ARE WAITING.

Me at pickup: Hi, sweetie! How was your day? I want to hear all about it! I missed you!

Me ten minutes later: NO. WE CANNOT STOP AT MCDONALD’S FOR A HAPPY MEAL. STOP CRYING. YOU JUST HAD ONE YESTERDAY. SOME KIDS GO THEIR WHOLE LIFE WITHOUT EVER GETTING A HAPPY MEAL. I WILL HAPPY MEAL YOU IF YOU DON’T STOP FIGHTING. BE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE. DO I NEED TO STOP THE CAR, BECAUSE YOU KNOW I WILL. STOP WHINING NOW.

Me at bedtime: Good night, baby. I love you so much and I had the best day with you. I am so so so proud of who you are and who you are going to be. Sweet dreams. Jesus loves you.

Me ten minutes later: GET BACK IN BED. YOU DON’T NEED ANOTHER GLASS OF WATER AND THE BLANKET YOU HAVE IS JUST FINE. IT’S NOT SCRATCHY. JESUS BETTER LOVE YOU, CAUSE YOU WILL BE IN BIG TROUBLE IF YOU GET OUT OF THAT BED ONE MORE TIME.

Me ten seconds later: Ok, I love you goodnight. BUT SERIOUSLY - DO NOT GET OUT OF BED AGAIN. I love you so much. BUT SERIOUSLY.

❤️ Motherhood is a very strange glass cage of emotion and a complete mix of going back and forth between acting like Mary Poppins and The Hulk. ❤️

Vanessa and Denis had a supportive birth team in place but were looking for a little extra support along their journey. They were so engaged in this new experience and wanted to know everything they could about the birthing process, the postpartum period and baby care.

I was able to provide them with private prenatal education and ongoing emotional support as they waited for the day they would meet their new baby boy. They radiated excitement and love for each other throughout the pregnancy, and now they shine even brighter with their son Bodhi in their arms. He was welcomed into this world on Oct. 17th at 1:00am.

She is 4 months.

Her aunt is holding her
Her eyes dart around looking for me.
She finds me and I feel her eyes burning into me.
I look over at her and she beams.
I smile back and carry on cutting the veges.
I can tell she’s staring at me.
I look up again but instead of a smile, her face crumbles and she begins to cry.
I take her back and her aunt finishes the veg.
She immediately stops crying.

She is 4 months.

I place her down on the mat next to the en-suite so I can duck to the loo.
My face disappears and she sobs.
I poke my head out and her relief is palpable.

She is 4 months.

She’s had enough of playing so I scoop her up.
There’s washing to bring in still so I pass her to daddy.
I turn to walk away and she’s already crying.
I turn back and she’s staring sadly at me.
I take her back and she snuggles in.
Daddy collects the washing.

She is 4 months.

She does not yet have the brain function to manipulate.
She’s not cunningly devising a plan.
She is not deliberately making my life hard.
She’s not asking for more than she needs.

She is 4 months.

Her needs are so genuine.
Her experiences so real and raw.

She is 4 months.

For the first time in her life she is realising that we are two separate people.
Until now, she and I were one and the same to her.
Just as we shared our circulatory system while she grew in my womb she came to this world knowing only our shared existence.
She didn’t exist without me and me without her.

She is 4 months.

Suddenly, she can see with painfully limited understanding that I can indeed leave her.
This person who is her sun, her moon , her stars.
This person who sustains her...
Can just walk away.

She is 4 months.

This reality is terrifying.
With no concept of time she only has one thing-
A deep trust and faith that I will come when she calls.

She is 4 months.

Some days, she’s permanently attached to my hip or the carrier.
Some days, she’ll happily play watching her brothers.
Some days, I can hand her over to another and she’ll happily coo and chat a while.
Some days, she crumbles before the handover is even complete.

She is 4 months.

She’s just learning about life.
Learning about trust and faith.
I come when she calls be it day or night.
As I also have deep faith and trust in her.
She knows what she needs and as long as my arms, my chest and my presence are where she finds peace, safety and security she shall have them.

She is, after all, only 4 months ❤️

Each of my three babies entered the world in their own unique way– one unplanned Cesarean birth, one home birth VBAC, and one hospital induction VBAC. 👶👶👶

I know how deeply birth experiences impact families, and especially mothers, for the rest of our lives– and that it can be tricky to prepare for birth when you can’t really plan how it will go. 🤷‍♀️

I want you to have a story you’ll love to tell... 😍

As your Certified Birth and Postpartum Doula, I walk alongside you and provide the continuous emotional, educational and physical support that can help you feel as prepared, calm, and joyful as possible as your story unfolds. 🌱

The way we speak to our children can be engrained in us and usually the words just fly out without much forethought. But what if we changed the way we speak to them, just a little bit? How would that change the way they see the world, themselves, and speak to their own children someday? 🤔

I feel it’s so important to be mindful of how to word things. This isn’t about perfection but intention.

Over here at Nurtured Birth, we love a good affirmation! Affirmations are statements that we repeat to ourselves to help us overcome negative thoughts and create change in the brain. These statements positively affect our thoughts feelings and actions. Affirmations can be used during to help you prepare for , and they can be used during your as you encounter new and times of uncertainty.
Your connects you to your parasympathetic nervous system-- the part of your nervous system that is responsible for helping you to rest, relax and stay calm. When you exhale for a few counts longer than your inhale, the vagus nerve, that runs from your neck to your diaphragm, tells your parasympathetic nervous system to kick in, and your sympathetic nervous system to turn down. Your sympathetic nervous system is responsible for your fight or flight response and this is the place where many women are giving birth today because they are afraid. When you learn about your options you can conquer your fears and when you focus on your breath, you can override your fear response! . “The breath is both ordinary and miraculous. It is with us wherever we are, and just by becoming aware of it we can find moments of calm in any situation.” Nancy Bardacke, Mindful birthing

"Just breathe" --two words a labouring woman hates to hear 😂

And yet, breathing through contractions is one of the most powerful techniques for pain relief we have. There are real physical changes that happen in the body and mind when we breathe--
✔️stimulates endorphin release for natural pain relief
✔️interrupts pain signals reaching the brain
✔️provides lots of oxygen to baby
✔️helps you think more positively about labour
✔️produces a feeling of being more in control

BUT is it enough to go into labour just planning to breathe through it all? Probably not. The research suggests that it is most effective in combination with other comfort measures-- think massage, position changes, and continuous support. If you want to have a non-medicated birth, it's all about teamwork! Your partner, your doula, and your doctor or midwife all work together to help you achieve your goals and have a healthy, safe delivery!

Many childbirth classes teach breathing for pain relief during labor. But is there evidence that this is effective? Which breathing techniques work best?
