Special shoutout to this guy. When I (Meredith) started Hazel & Rosemary as a sourdough baking hobby 6 years ago, Chad was immediately supportive. As the business grew, he took on more and more responsibilities to help keep the business running smoothly. He learned the sourdough process from mixing to baking, and jumped in with both feet. The business is only possible because we are an amazing team together. Not only are we husband and wife, but we are equal business partners. As the creative one, logistics and details and systems are not my strong suit. But Chad excels at systems and has prioritized them over the past year. This has led to much smoother production and bake days, increased our efficiency, and thereby reinforced the sustainability of our business.
Here’s a practical example: Friday prep days used to begin at 5am and we often weren’t getting to bed until midnight, only to wake up again at 1:30 to turn ovens on and then start baking at 3…now we are baking and prepping more than ever, we’ve added in a whole new product line (sourdough pastries), and we’re finishing work for the day by 3:30pm on Fridays! This has given us back more family time and time for things we love.

Chad, I am so grateful for all that you do for our business everyday, from getting up before me to turn on ovens and start mixing dough to keeping us organized with systems and efficiencies.

When you see Chad at the market on Saturday, give him a fist bump or a high five. He’s a pretty amazing guy!

Our family LOVES ice cream! This summer we have made it our family goal to visit as many different ice cream spots as we can find in between sourdough baking and summer markets! As a scouting family, we understand how significant and devastating this loss is. This is a local Scout troop (1st Valley BPSA) that could really use support right now!

On the way home from a camp this past weekend, the truck with all their gear, archery equipment, banners, food and scouting supplies caught fire. The truck is a total loss, and so is the gear. We’re happy to hear that Scott is safe, but this loss hits deeply to a group like this. Scouting has been life changing to our kids. Please give if you can to help them continue their program in the best way!

I’ve been waiting months for this moment! Last week we finally finished building our greenhouse, and on the weekend the peppers moved in, and I’ve been waiting for a rainstorm so that I could sit out there and listen to the rain falling on the roof. It’s the best sound! Add in that morning coffee and it’s a match made in heaven and part of what my dreams are made of 😆 if the mosquitoes 🦟 would buzz off it would be even more perfect!

Did you know that we are working on growing more and more of the ingredients we use in our sourdough? We’ve been strategically planting herbs, tomatoes, and peppers as well as other vegetables that we can use in our products. Summer harvests are the best. We also partner with some pretty amazing local farms for items we don’t grow, or can’t grow enough of. Sourcing local seasonal ingredients has been a passion of ours since the beginning and everything just tastes better when it’s fresh!

Today we’re very grateful for this rain because our gardens needed it! Sending good growing vibes to all our farmer friends!

Banana walnut & chocolate is a flavour that we’ve baked a few times, and it’s the best for toast, French toast, bread pudding, or an amazing peanut butter sandwich…try adding a bit of honey too!

We were so excited when Pam the owner of Whippoorwill Cafe Arts & Culture approached us with interest in adding some of our products into her café! We’re excited to share that the first round of baked goods will be available there starting this Wednesday! This cute Anishinabek café is located in Atikamekshang Anishinabek in Naughton and is worth a visit for breakfast, lunch, or a pick-me-up!

This week you will be able to grab a lilac scone, a cinnamon roll, or one of our tasty cookies in either ginger molasses, oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip.

As much as we’ve been LOVING this beautiful summer weather, we’re feeling grateful for this rain. Our gardens certainly needed it!

Week 2 for our 100% sourdough pastries! 🥐 it’s a fun learning journey and each week there are things to tweak. This week, the croissants were too tall and narrow and they kind of toppled over into cones while they were baking. But they’re beautiful and delicious still and I know how to fix it next week!
