First day of school! New routines, new schools…we’re juggling 3 kids at 3 different schools with 3 different morning departure and start times over here 🤪 Grade 5, 7 and 9, we’ve got this!

How’s your first day of school going?

We’re featuring Apple cinnamon loaves this week, and it’s a customer favourite and full of fall comfort! It’s delicious toasted, for French toast, or as an amazing grilled cheese! And we’re so excited to be using Sudbury-grown apples in our loaves this week! Thanks to our friends at Beautiful Field Fruit Farm in Naughton. Find these loaves at our retail partner locations this week, as well as the Thursday Market and the Kivi Park Artisan walk this weekend!

Today was a big day for our family! We picked up a new truck which will serve the needs of our business as well as keep our family safe and carry us on all our adventures to come!

This new vehicle purchase was already in progress before our vehicle troubles with our car earlier this week and it actually replaces our 10 year old van which carried us on many memories and adventures and has been the workhorse carrying our sourdough to markets and wholesale partners across the city. It’s not an exaggeration to say that it carried thousands and thousands of loaves of bread over the past 6 years!

We are so grateful to belangerford for helping us make this happen! Special shoutout to Tiffany, Manon and Dom and the rest of the team at BĂ©langer Ford in Chelmsford for a seamless experience! The Belanger Ford Lincoln Centre

Happy Friday and welcome to the Long weekend! Are you squeezing in one last getaway or having a stay-cation to get all the things to get kids ready for back to school? We had all sorts of plans for this weekend, and we’ve changed all of them 🤣

It’s been a wild ride of a week for us this week!

A few things:

1) deliveries have been made this morning to these spots:

2) we are NOT at the Saturday market this weekend. We’re sorry to miss it again, and we were going to try and pull it off to be there even though it’s a long weekend, but with the week we’ve had, it’s just not happening.

3) we’re excited to be picking up a new vehicle today that will serve us well for the business! Our van has faithfully been with us for the last 10 years and this is a big change. We’re excited!

4) our car has been repaired and this means a trip back to Sault Ste. Marie this weekend to go pick it up 🤪 our tent trailer arrives home today, and by Sunday, we can officially say we’ve concluded our road trip vacation 🤣

5) our kids go back to school on Tuesday, and I’m not ready! I love having them around in the summer. It feels like summer flew by!

6) we’re very excited to be at Kivi Park Artisan Walk next weekend! Planning for that begins this weekend too.

7) here’s a picture of me enjoying one of our Apple cinnamon danishes…sometimes customers wonder if we actually eat our own products…yes we do, when there is extra! 🤣

Pssst! Our maple pecan scones are back! These are a customer favourite and we know many of you were sad then these rotated out in the Spring and last Fall…available today at the Sudbury Market!

Today’s the day! Fresh sourdough loaves return to shelves around town! And it’s a very exciting day because it’s our first delivery day to D&A Fine Meats!

Fall flavours loading…to be clear, I absolutely LOVE Fall, but I’m not quite ready to let go of summer yet. I’m also feeling very unprepared for my kids to go back to school next week! I’m just not ready…it’s a big year for us as our oldest starts high school, our middle moves into a new school and our youngest holds down the fort as the last Teller in our elementary school. Three kids, three schools…we’ve got this!

As we bring back our seasonal Fall features, we’re starting with our smoked Gouda & Apple focaccia! This one is a customer favourite for sure! Find it first at D&A Fine Meats on Wednesday and then at the Thursday Market!

On a follow up note to yesterday’s vehicle mayhem: things didn’t exactly track in the direction we hoped and the car is still being fixed which means we move to plan B, or maybe we’re on plan G by now 🤪 either way, it’s looking like a road trip back to the Sault to retrieve our car this weekend instead of it coming home with our friends today…

To say that today didn’t go as planned would be an understatement. Our last day of vacation and our travel day completely flipped on end when out of nowhere our car decided it didn’t want to drive back to Sudbury pulling a trailer today. It was a stressful drive from Pancake Bay Provincial Park to Sault Ste. Marie today navigating the hills of Lake Superior with a vehicle that had an “Engine Power Reduced” message pop up in the middle of a hill.

While our plans to be home by late afternoon/evening derailed, we are grateful for all the people in our corner who stepped up to help us today.
• Chad’s mom was travelling with us with her big van that suddenly became our life raft back to Sudbury
• Prouse Chevrolet in Sault Ste. Marie took excellent care of us today, fitting us into their busy schedule and troubleshooting the problem with us, going above and beyond to help us try to get back on the road
• new friends in Sault Ste. Marie told us where to bring our car for service, and came to meet us there and then towed our trailer to their house for safekeeping and offered to drive it back to Sudbury later this week
• our amazing friends who helped us trouble shoot the problem earlier today, and since they’re still camping, they will hopefully be able to pick up our car tomorrow and drive it home if it’s repaired

So in a less than ideal situation, all the pieces lined up to get us home, get our vehicle and trailer taken care of, and get home to make the sourdough prep happen.

Oh, and did we mention, we almost forgot the sourdough starter we mixed this morning in our car at the service centre in Sault Ste. Marie?! Fortunately someone was still there to let us back in to grab it.

Whew. What a day. Not how we planned it. But we are grateful to be home safely.

Waking up our sourdough starter after a week off! Our starter, Corona, travelled with us this week and stayed nice and happy in the cooler. Today we give her a refresh with flour and water that we brought from home. She will rise while we drive back home, and will be ready for another bigger feeding tonight and that will power all our dough tomorrow and become fresh sourdough loaves on Wednesday! This is how we build up our starter from just a few hundred grams to several thousand grams for big production days!

As we head into the Fall season and back to routines, we have made a slight change to our delivery schedules. Effective Sept. 1, all our Tuesday deliveries have permanently moved to Wednesdays. This gives us an extra day of rest, and it streamlines things for our production. It also means that we don’t need to move schedules around for long weekends anymore! This change applied to Paris Natural Health Foods, The Nickel Refillery and Joyful Home.

We look forward to baking for you this week!

We’re on holidays but we couldn’t wait to tell you that you will have another great spot in the South End to pick up your favourite sourdough! We’re very excited to share that starting Wednesday Sept. 2, you will be able to find our sourdough loaves & focaccia at D&A Fine Meats at 1885 Paris St. every Wednesday!

This is a wonderful spot to pickup fresh cuts of meat, prepared meals, and gourmet food items! Definitely worth a visit! We’re very excited about this partnership opportunity!
