๐ŸŒˆ Happy Pride Month! ๐ŸŒˆ

At Beyond Words North, we believe that every voice matters. โค๏ธ

Communication looks different for everyone. Some people communicate with spoken words, some use AAC, some use gestures, signs, facial expressions, writing, or a combination of many different methods. Every form of communication is valid, meaningful, and deserving of respect.

Pride Month is a time to celebrate diversity, authenticity, acceptance, and the courage to be yourself. Itโ€™s also a reminder that everyone deserves to be heard, understood, and supported exactly as they are.

This month and every month, Beyond Words North is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space where all individuals can communicate, connect, and thrive. ๐ŸŒˆโœจ

๐Ÿ’œ Hi! Iโ€™m Meghan, the Speech-Language Pathologist behind Beyond Words North. ๐Ÿ’œ

As Speech & Hearing Month comes to an end, I thought it was the perfect time to reintroduce myself and reflect on a goal I set for myself this month. ๐ŸŒทโœจ

For the past 31 days, Iโ€™ve shown up here every single day. ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ’ช

Iโ€™ve shared therapy ideas ๐ŸŽฒ, AAC ๐Ÿ“ฑ, communication tips ๐Ÿ’ฌ, speech and language milestones ๐ŸŒฑ, autism acceptance ๐ŸŒˆ, adult communication support ๐Ÿง , swallowing information ๐Ÿฅค, and little glimpses into my world as an SLP serving families across Ontario. ๐Ÿ

Some posts reached hundreds of people. Some reached thousands. ๐Ÿ“ˆ Some sparked conversations. Others simply helped one person learn something new. And honestly? Thatโ€™s enough. ๐Ÿ’œ

Speech-language pathology is about so much more than speech.

Itโ€™s about helping people connect. ๐Ÿค
Itโ€™s about giving someone a voice. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ
Itโ€™s about confidence. ๐ŸŒŸ
Itโ€™s about relationships. โค๏ธ
Itโ€™s about being understood. ๐Ÿ’•

Whether Iโ€™m supporting a child learning their first words ๐Ÿ‘ถ, a child using AAC ๐Ÿ“ฑ, someone working on speech sounds ๐Ÿ”ค, an adult rebuilding communication after a stroke ๐Ÿง , or someone experiencing swallowing difficulties ๐Ÿฅค, I feel incredibly lucky to do this work every day.

Thank you for supporting Beyond Words North. ๐Ÿ’œ
Thank you for following along. ๐Ÿ’œ
Thank you for helping me spread awareness about communication, connection, and access. ๐Ÿ’œ

Hereโ€™s to continuing to help people find their voice. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธโœจ

๐Ÿ’ง Speech Therapy Tip of the Day: Hydrate! ๐Ÿ’ฆโœจ

One of the simplest things you can do for your voice is drink enough water.

Whether youโ€™re a teacher, coach, singer, public speaker, customer service worker, parent, or someone who talks all day long, your vocal folds work hard. Staying hydrated ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ˜Š helps keep them moving smoothly and can reduce strain, fatigue, and irritation.

Think of water as fuel for your voice. ๐Ÿšฐ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Your voice deserves the same care and attention as the rest of your body.๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฉถ

How much water have you had today? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ’œ

Transitions can be HARD for kids ๐Ÿ’œโœจ
And honestly? They can be hard for parents too.

Moving from one activity to another often means:
๐Ÿซง stopping something preferred
๐Ÿง  shifting attention
๐Ÿ’ซ adjusting expectations
๐Ÿ˜ฃ managing big feelings

The good news? Small supports can make a BIG difference ๐ŸŒˆ

Things like:
โœจ visual timers โฐ โฒ๏ธ
โœจ first/then language ๐Ÿ“ˆ
โœจ movement breaks ๐Ÿ•บ
โœจ transition songs ๐ŸŽถ
โœจ previewing whatโ€™s next ๐Ÿ‘€
โœจ offering simple choices ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

โ€ฆcan help transitions feel more predictable, safe, and manageable ๐Ÿ’•

We donโ€™t need โ€œperfectโ€ transitions every time.
Weโ€™re building regulation, flexibility, and confidence one small moment at a time ๐ŸŒฑ

Bubbles are basically speech therapy magic ๐Ÿซง๐Ÿ’œ

They grab attention, encourage interaction, create opportunities for communication, and turn simple moments into meaningful connection.

With bubbles, we can work on:
๐Ÿ—ฃ requesting
๐Ÿ‘€ joint attention
๐Ÿ“ฑ AAC use
๐Ÿ’ฌ turn-taking
๐Ÿ˜‚ shared joy & engagement
๐ŸŒฌ breath support and speech sounds

And sometimes the biggest communication moments happen during the smallest, most playful activities.

Never underestimate the therapeutic power of bubbles โœจ

๐Ÿššโœจ Building language one traffic jam at a time.

To many people, this might just look like toys on the floor. But in speech therapy, play like this creates endless opportunities for communication, learning, and connection. ๐Ÿ’œ

During this activity, we worked on:
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ vocabulary and sentence building
๐Ÿšฆ concepts like in/on/under/behind/next to
๐Ÿ’ฌ requesting, commenting, and answering questions
๐Ÿง  problem solving and flexible thinking
๐Ÿ“š sequencing and storytelling
๐Ÿค turn-taking and social interaction
๐Ÿ‘‚ listening and following directions

Play-based therapy allows children to learn naturally through meaningful interaction โ€” and honestly, some of the best communication moments happen right in the middle of a pretend traffic jam. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿš’

Communication difficulties arenโ€™t always obvious ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒ™โœจ

Sometimes they look like:
๐Ÿง  losing words mid-sentence
๐Ÿ“ž avoiding phone calls or social situations
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ feeling mentally exhausted after conversations
๐Ÿ’ญ struggling to concentrate or organize thoughts
๐ŸŽญ masking difficulties to โ€œseem fineโ€
๐Ÿ’” feeling frustrated, isolated, or misunderstood

Many adults quietly work incredibly hard just to keep up with everyday communication ๐ŸŒฑ

Communication changes can happen for so many reasons:
โœจ stroke
โœจ brain injury
โœจ cognitive-communication challenges
โœจ neurodivergence
โœจ voice changes
โœจ mental health
โœจ neurological conditions

Support isnโ€™t about being โ€œperfect.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ซ
Itโ€™s about feeling more confident, connected, understood, and supported in everyday life ๐Ÿค๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ

You do not have to navigate it alone ๐ŸŒฟโ˜•๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

Speech therapy can happen during the sweetest little moments ๐Ÿช๐Ÿ’œ

In this activity, we used pretend cookie-making to work on:
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ the โ€œangry catโ€ sound (/f/)
โœจ vocabulary and language modeling
๐Ÿค turn taking
๐Ÿง  following directions
๐Ÿช pretend play and sequencing

Play-based therapy helps create meaningful opportunities for communication while keeping learning motivating, engaging, and FUN.

Sometimes the best progress happens when children donโ€™t even realize how much theyโ€™re practicing. ๐Ÿ’œ

Every skill. Every interaction. Every day.
We help every voice be heard.
