We've had lots of questions regarding emergency contraceptives lately! What are they? How do they work? How do I get one?

Emergency contraceptives work by keeping the egg from leaving the o***y, keeping the s***m from meeting the egg, and/or keeping the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus. It does not cause disruption to the embryo once fertilization has occurred. In other words, it prevents pregnancy, but does not cause a miscarriage or abortion.

The closer to the encounter that emergency contraception is used, the more effective it will be in preventing pregnancy. Emergency contraception does not provide protection from any STIs.

There are two options for emergency contraceptives: hormonal pills or a copper IUD. Swipe to see details on each type!

Halifax Sexual Health Centre is seeking physicians to join our team! 🩺 HSHC is a non-profit clinic run by an Executive Director and Board of Directors offering inclusive sexual, reproductive, and gender-affirming health services.

Currently, we have a team of 13 physicians working part-time from 1- 4 shifts per week. Clinics are offered in half or full day format. Visits are generally by appointment only and physicians can determine how frequently to book visits within the clinic timeframe. We use Telus MedAccess EMR and a text reminder service. Clinics are fee-for-service. Clinics are additionally supported by staff RNs, Gender-Affirming Care Coordinator, MSW, and pelvic physiotherapist.
