Building Social Interaction Through Meaningful Play
Social interaction can grow through activities that are enjoyable, familiar, and connected to a child’s interests.
When a family shared that they wanted more opportunities to play together, we introduced UNO as a meaningful way to support participation in a shared game. Because the child enjoys numbers, the game offered a motivating starting point for learning and connecting with family members.
To make the activity more accessible, we:
☑️Broke the game into manageable steps
☑️Arranged the cards to make prompting and support easier
☑️Modelled how to complete each part of the game
☑️Provided support as needed while encouraging active participation
☑️Created opportunities to practise turn-taking, following the flow of the game, and engaging with family members
At Walker Developmental Services, skill building is individualized around each child’s interests, strengths, communication style, and family priorities. The goal is not to make play look one particular way—it is to create meaningful opportunities for participation, enjoyment, connection, and growing independence.
