Dr. David Veeneman Being truly healthy occurs when your body functions at its optimal potential. Simple as that.

Your nervous system controls and regulates every cell of your body. When your nervous system doesn’t work right, you don’t work right. And when you don’t work right, you have less than optimal health! Carlisle Family Chiropractic uses state-of-the-art technology and techniques to determine how stress is affecting your body's function and restore it back to optimal. You probably don’t think twice about grabbing your bag as you leave the house. Same shoulder, same side, same habit you’ve had for years. But that routine — repeated hundreds of times — may be quietly reshaping the way your body holds itself, and not for the better.

One Side Does All the Work
When you consistently carry weight on one side of your body, your muscles adapt. The shoulder on your carrying side tends to hike upward and pull forward, while the opposite side compensates by dropping. Over time, this creates an uneven load on your spine and can contribute to muscle imbalances that are hard to undo without deliberate effort.

Your Spine Feels the Tilt
The spine is designed to carry weight evenly distributed down its length. A heavy bag hanging off one shoulder shifts that balance. Your torso leans subtly to counteract the load, and your spine curves to follow.

Do this every day for months or years, and what starts as a small tilt can become a pattern your body accepts as normal, even when it isn’t.

Backpacks Aren’t Automatically Better
Switching to a backpack helps distribute weight more evenly, but only if you actually use both straps. A backpack worn on one shoulder creates the same problem as a tote or shoulder bag.

If your bag habits are affecting your posture, you might notice:

One shoulder sitting visibly higher than the other
Tension or aching along one side of your neck
Discomfort in your mid or lower back that seems to ease on days when you travel light
These symptoms aren’t always dramatic, but noticing them early means you can change your habits to prevent further discomfort.

Small Changes, Real Results
Switching sides regularly, downsizing what you carry, and choosing bags with wider, padded straps can all make a meaningful difference.

If the imbalance has been building for a while, the muscles and joints involved may need some help resetting.
If you’ve noticed one-sided tension or postural changes you can’t quite explain, Carlisle Family Chiropractic Clinic is here to help. A straightforward assessment can identify what’s going on and point you toward relief.

31 May is World No To***co Day

The Member States of the World Health Organization created World No To***co Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the to***co epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. In 1988, a resolution was passed, calling for the celebration of World No To***co Day, every year on 31 May.

What does this have to do with your spinal health?

Smoking negatively affects spinal health by:

☠Accelerating disc degeneration and herniation
☠Reducing bone density and increasing fracture risk
☠Impairing blood flow and nutrient delivery to spinal tissues
☠Slowing healing and recovery after injury or surgery
☠Increasing chronic back pain and inflammation

✅Quitting smoking can significantly improve spinal health, enhance healing, and reduce the risk of degenerative conditions, making it a critical step for long-term spine care.

Are you taking steps to quit smoking as part of your routine?

Why not reach out to others in your community and start an accountability group and work together toward your goal?

Been a 'heavy' week?
Gravity and stress significantly affect your spine and nervous system!

Muscle Tension: Stress leads to muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and lower back, which can alter spinal alignment and contribute to pain.

Nervous System Sensitivity: Chronic stress can increase pain sensitivity, making even minor discomfort feel severe.

Poor Posture: Stress often causes hunched shoulders and rounded backs, putting extra strain on the spine, which can lead to muscle imbalances and chronic pain.

Inflammation: Stress triggers the release of hormones like cortisol, which can lead to inflammation, affecting the spine's ability to heal and potentially worsening conditions like arthritis or spinal stenosis.

Managing stress through relaxation techniques, physical activity and regular chiropractic adjustments can help mitigate these effects and improve overall spinal health!

Happy Friday and hope to see you soon!

We are still navigating our new online 'hub' platform - can you help us (and yourself)?

Here are some ways you can ensure that you'll never miss* an appointment (unless there are extenuating circumstances, of course!):

🤳 - Immediately after booking, add your appointment to your phone calendar with a 24hr AND 1hr prior to appointment reminder. (ask about our iCal feature!)
📇 - If you don't use a phone calendar, please take an appointment card and transfer the information to your paper calendar or day timer.
🗒 - Use sticky notes, tie ribbons around your fingers, elastic bands on your wrists ...actually, scratch those last 2!

Here's a link to a site that can help you remember even WITHOUT a calendar! 😮

Did you know that the body has the power to heal itself?
Read this testimony for evidence of this :

I have to express my sincere thanks for another very successful visit. I was in excruciating pain the entire night before and I had to call for help and my request was immediately accepted.
Where else can you receive such dedication?
When I left I already felt much better thanks to the knowledge and experience of Dr. Veeneman.
I am always astounded how fast the healing progresses after my visit.
~ Rolf
