🍪 One-Bowl Healthy Oatmeal Banana Cookies

A simple homemade snack that works well for older adults and kids alike. Soft, satisfying and easy to make in just one bowl.

Ingredients:

• 2 very ripe or frozen bananas, thawed and mashed
• 2 cups rolled oats
• ¾ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
• ¼ cup ground flaxseed
• 1 tsp baking powder
• ½–1 tsp cinnamon, to taste
• ¼ cup peanut butter
• ¼ cup maple syrup
• 2 tbsp almond milk
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• ⅓ cup mini chocolate chips, optional

Directions:

In one bowl, mix the oats, coconut, ground flaxseed, baking powder and cinnamon.

Add the mashed bananas, peanut butter, maple syrup, almond milk and vanilla. Mix until well combined. Fold in the mini chocolate chips, if using.

Scoop onto a lined baking sheet and gently flatten.

Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centres are set. Let cool for a few minutes before transferring to a rack.

Nutritional highlights:

Do you have these essential medical tools at home?

Small tools can make a very big difference when caring for yourself, an aging parent, or a loved one.

A few basics every home should consider having:

• Digital thermometer
• Blood pressure monitor
• Scale
• Pulse oximeter
• Medication organizer
• First aid supplies
• Updated emergency contact list

A few important reminders:

• Check batteries regularly
• Ensure equipment is working properly and not outdated
• Replace older mercury thermometers with safer digital options
• Learn how to properly use each device before an emergency happens
• Keep instructions accessible for family members and caregivers

Medication safety is also important:

• Review medications regularly with your pharmacist or healthcare provider
• Check expiry dates routinely
• Dispose of expired or unused medications safely through your pharmacy
• Keep medications organized and clearly labeled

Being proactive at home can support safer aging, better monitoring, and more informed decision-making for families and caregivers.

Nature supports more than we often realize.

Spending time in natural environments has been shown to support mood, attention, and the body’s ability to manage stress.

In caregiving, this matters for both the caregiver and the person receiving care.

It does not need to be complicated. Small, simple moments can help:

• A short walk outside
• Sitting in natural light
• Fresh flowers in the home
• A few minutes of fresh air each day

These are accessible ways to support well-being, connection, and daily comfort.

Take the opportunity when you can. Even a few minutes can make a difference.

Some of the most meaningful moments in caregiving do not come from tasks. They come from connection.

Taking a few extra minutes to sit, listen, and ask open-ended questions can change the entire tone of a visit.

Try simple questions like:
• “What was the best part of your day?”
• “What would you like to do together today?”
• “Tell me about a favourite memory.”

These moments support emotional well-being, reduce loneliness, and build trust. As caregivers, our presence matters just as much as the care we provide.

Music can also help create connection. A familiar song can bring comfort, spark memories, and shift mood in a gentle, natural way.

Care is not only what we do. It is how we make someone feel.
