EPISODE 48 | HOLDING SPACE
**“WHEN YOUR CHILD WON’T GO TO SLEEP — A NERVOUS SYSTEM PERSPECTIVE”**
🎧 The Holding Space Podcast is now available — conversations on parenting, regulation, and the deeper work of healing together. 💬🌿
Bedtime.
For some families, it’s calm and predictable.
But for many…
it’s where everything unravels.
The stalling.
The “just one more…”
The sudden burst of energy.
The tears that appear out of nowhere.
And underneath it all, the quiet question:
“Why won’t they just go to sleep?”
But bedtime isn’t just about sleep.
It’s about separation.
It’s about safety.
It’s about the nervous system trying to settle after a full day.
Attachment research teaches us that children need a secure base —
a felt sense that connection is still there, even when they let go.
So when children resist bedtime,
their body may be asking:
“Will the connection still be here when I wake up?”
“Is it safe to let go right now?”
What looks like clinginess, hyperactivity, or “one more hug”
is often a nervous system trying to regulate.
And when we meet those moments with softness instead of pressure,
something shifts.
A slower tone.
A hand on their back.
A few extra moments of connection.
Because safety helps the body settle enough to rest.
And sometimes, bedtime isn’t asking for perfect routines —
just a little more presence. 🤍
