Every message helps bring attention to this issue and the potential to make regulated massage therapy more affordable for Canadians.
Massage therapy is one of the most widely used therapeutic health services in Canada, yet regulated massage therapy services remain subject to GST/HST. When Canadians receive care from a physiotherapist, chiropractor or psychotherapist, those services are tax-exempt. When they receive regulated massage therapy for a comparable therapeutic purpose, they pay tax.
The Canadian Massage Therapist Association (CMTA) is advocating for a change to correct this discrepancy and make regulated massage therapy more affordable for patients.
The federal government has previously confirmed that massage therapy meets the criteria for a GST/HST exemption, and a similar legislative mechanism was used to exempt psychotherapy in 2024. The CMTA is calling for an amendment to the Excise Tax Act in the fall 2026 federal budget.
