Horses don't exist for us to sit on and ride them.

There is a massive disconnect I observe (and I once held) between humans and horses. We think we have the right to ride a horse no matter how old they are, what condition they're in, whether or not we have EVER had our equipment fit to them...

The below is my mare when I first got her as a 4yo. I was riding her. I had this really screwed up idea that she was a saint because she was so "chill".

The reality? She was incredibly weak. If you know me you know things really never got better with her. She is the reason I do what I do today. Perhaps I'm atoning...

You only know what you know. And the purpose of this post is not to shame anyone but to try and educate and spread awareness.

A healthy back provides a solid foundation for a saddle to sit and allows the horse to carry us. Saddling and riding a weak back is detrimental to their health.

It is not our inherent right.

You know how much I love adjustable tack!

Traveling the US as often as I do affords me the benefit of getting to see what vets, trainers and riders are up to south of the border.

On a recent trip to Oregon, we spent 2 days at our long time client and vet podiatrist's training barn. That's where I was introduced to these Winderen gel bits.

Clients I've seen regularly since 2024 were raving about them. I watched their horses go in these bits for two days and was genuinely so impressed.

I'm not one for gimmicky tack and NO bit will solve a mouth that's unhappy because the horse's back hurts.

Soft quiet mouths, licking and chewing under saddle, zero and I mean zero damage to the gel from use- yep I was sold.

AND, the mouthpiece is interchangeable!

So now I stock these bits in Canada starting with the eggbutt slim flexi-mullen.

Please ask me to try these out any time if you've struggled to find the right bit for your horse.

Lexis jump by Lovas Equestrian demo has just landed in Kamloops!

This tree is designed for a broader back and modest wither. It is adjustable through the universal gullet system and has wool flocked panels.

Fitting the tree to the shape of the horse is the first place I start when selecting a saddle.

If the shape of the tree doesn't match, no amount of flocking, panel shaping or half pad shimming will make the saddle fit correctly.

Lovas has several tree shapes to choose from, a major reason I wanted to be a partner!

"How often should I get my wool flocked saddle checked?"

Here's what was pulled out of a dressage saddle that hadn't been serviced in over 4 years.

Rider complained of low back pain and horse was showing signs of discomfort under saddle. Wool will shift and compact over time causing lumps and unevenness in the panel.

Rider weight, discipline, usage and flocking material all can be taken into consideration when recommending saddle checks.

If I have an adult dressage rider over 160lbs riding 5-6 days a week in a wool flocked saddle, I want to check that saddle 3x a year.

The 100lb teenager in a synthetic wool jump saddle riding 3 days a week should be checked at least once per year.

In general, an annual saddle check is always a great idea by a qualified fitter.

I include saddle checks for free with all bodywork treatments. (This is just a look over of your saddle for soundness and symmetry, not a saddle fitting).

Happy trails!

Broken hair, burn marks, rubs of any kind cannot be ignored.

It's a crystal clear sign there is a problem with how the saddle fits.

The horse's continued compliance and performance is not a free pass to ignore these injuries.

Yes, they are injuries. Nip them in the bud while they're a small issue.
