Helping to facilitate a women's retreat in Bali was an opportunity that landed in my lap in early April and less than 3 weeks later, I was sitting on a plane heading to the beautiful island of Bali. Despite normal logic telling me this was a crazy thing to do given so many factors in my life and the world, I also had a powerful knowing in the depths of my soul that this was absolutely what I should be doing and where I should be heading. That knowing was both comforting and very unsettling at the same time because I knew this was going to be one of those life altering experiences that would change me forever. There was no way I was returning the same version of myself but I had no idea how it would unfold and how much of myself I would have to face.
Well, Bali didn't disappoint. She held me with love and compassion and deep grounding while she ripped me open, made me face most of my fears and insecurities and then held me with such grace while I allowed the new version of me to show up, piece by piece.
Bali was a powerful and beautiful example of duality and the gifts that holds for our growth, if we let it. The island holds many duality truths, such as incredible natural beauty, but also a country struggling deeply with garbage management, pollution, sanitation and corruption; a polarising reality of the wealthy and the much less fortunate; and the contrast between locals and visitors and how joy and happiness are expressed.
The first two examples probably don't need much explanation, but perhaps the last one does. I would like to stress that this observation has nothing to do with how hard or easy ones life is and everything to do with how you choose to show up in that life. I have experienced this same phenomena in Africa, but the impact hit differently this time. It was so much more profound in Bali, more because of where I was at in my own growth rather than anything else.

Honouring my Lineage 🙏

The beautiful woman in the picture above is my paternal grandmother. Time shared in this lifetime was brief but profound. She passed when I was 15, but the first 11 years of my life, she was on the other side of the planet. She was in the UK, and we were in Southern Africa. 

Our time together was reserved for holidays, but she had a truly profound impact on my life. She was the most incredible, loving, compassionate person I have ever known. The depth of our soul connection is still something I cannot express in words. I have felt her with me every day of my life in the nearly 4 decades since she passed. She has walked every step with me and I am so honoured and blessed to have had her as my greatest cheerleader in this life. 

She did not have an easy life. She was incredibly intelligent but force to leave school at about 13 to start working to help suppprt the family. She was so gifted musically, playing the piano (able to play a song meerly from hearing it once), she had the voice of an angel when she sang, and her knitting, sewing and seamstress skills were incredible. The list goes on. Despite life's challenges, she remained loving, kind, generous, and compassionate. She has been my greatest role model in this life, as to how I choose to show up each day. 

She and I are proof that ancestral trauma really is carried in the DNA. Many of the emotional and relationship struggles she faced, turned out to be mine too. Only this time, with her by my side, wrapping her unconditonal love around me, I have broken many of those cycles. She stayed in a marriage that held a lot of darkness, but when my marriage reached darkness that almost broke me, I chose to walk away. She held me with so much love when the tears flowed and the pain and sadness seemed unending and overwhelming. She was my compass when I realised I had lost myself in the darkness. She was my light, shining brightly, my anchor, my constant reminder to choose love, hope, compassion, kindness and not get lost in the darkness, the anger, the betrayal, the pain and the resentment.
