What men should know about prostate symptoms, early detection and year-round health support
As Movember wraps up for 2025, Michelle Gray, Owner of Gray’s Compounding Pharmacy in Kimberley, reminds her customers that men’s health is a year-round concern.
Prostate cancer remains one of the most significant health issues facing men today. One in eight men in Canada will be diagnosed in their lifetime.
“Movember has helped ease some of the stigma around men’s health, especially when it comes to mental health and prostate or testicular cancer,” Michelle says. “Still, the real goal is year-round awareness and care.”
When it comes to prostate cancer in particular, more than 217,000 Canadian men are currently living with or beyond the disease. Globally, more than 1.4 million men were diagnosed in 2020.
“When a disease has this much impact worldwide, awareness and early diagnosis become essential,” Michelle says. “Prostate cancer is treatable, but timing matters. Men often delay care because they’re busy or unsure which symptoms should prompt a check-in. Even small changes are worth following up on.”
Common early indicators of prostate concerns include:
• Frequent nighttime urination
• A weak stream or difficulty starting
• Pain or pressure in the pelvic area
• Blood in the urine or semen
• New or persistent lower-back or hip discomfort
Survival rates are high when prostate cancer is found early, yet many men are diagnosed later because symptoms were dismissed or misunderstood.
“These symptoms don’t always mean cancer,” Michelle says. “But they shouldn’t be ignored. Men tend to wait months before bringing it up. A routine check-up can rule out concerns or catch problems early.”
