Fresh ionized “Kangen” water often looks cloudy or milky right out of the machine, and that’s usually normal. Here’s what’s going on:

1. Tiny hydrogen gas bubbles from electrolysis
Kangen machines make alkaline water by running it over electrodes. That process splits water and produces dissolved hydrogen gas. When the water comes out, you’re seeing millions of micro-bubbles suspended in it — like when you pour a beer or open soda.

These bubbles make the water look cloudy or white for 30–60 seconds, then it clears from the bottom up as the gas escapes. Enagic/Kangen distributors actually describe this: “9.5 pH Water should look cloudy (oxygen rich and the abundance of hydrogen ions forms the cloudy look)”.

Quick test: Fill a clear glass and let it sit. If it clears within a minute starting from the bottom, it was just gas bubbles.

2. Mineral micro-particles / calcium
Ionizers don’t add minerals, they concentrate what’s already in your tap water. Electrolysis can cause dissolved calcium and magnesium to precipitate as tiny white particles, especially if your source water is hard. That can give a longer-lasting hazy look.

3. New filter or trapped air
If you just changed the filter, air gets trapped in the housing. It purges as cloudy water for the first few gallons. Flushing 2-4 gallons usually fixes it.

4. When cloudiness is a red flag
Not all cloudiness is harmless. If the water stays cloudy, smells bad, or you see particles that don’t clear, it could be:

Calcium buildup/mold/bacteria inside neglected machines
Carbon fines from a new filter — harmless but should be flushed
Kangen machines need monthly cleaning and annual deep cleaning to prevent scale and microbial growth.
