Three things chronic stress does to your body that most people don't connect:

1. It raises your blood sugar — even without changing your diet. Cortisol signals your liver to release glucose. Over time, this can contribute to insulin resistance.

2. It disrupts your thyroid and s*x hormones — cortisol and reproductive hormones compete for the same precursors. Prolonged stress often shows up as irregular cycles, low libido, or unexplained weight changes.

3. It increases cardiovascular risk — chronic cortisol elevation is linked to elevated blood pressure and inflammation markers, two things we assess directly in our Cardiac Risk program.

What if the sugar conversation is only half the story?

Insulin resistance is strongly connected to chronic inflammation and vagus nerve health — two things that have nothing to do with what you ate for breakfast.

When inflammation stays elevated, insulin signaling breaks down. The vagus nerve is what regulates that inflammation. Low vagal tone means the inflammatory signal stays louder, longer.

Stress, poor sleep, gut imbalance, and chronic pain can all feed insulin resistance — completely independent of diet. If you have been doing all the right things and your blood sugar still isn't cooperating, this might be why.
