We have pharmacist led clinics the evenings of June 11th, 16th, 18th and 25th where we will be open 9am to 8pm. We also have a Saturday pharmacist led clinic June 27th 9am to 3pm.

There has been a lot of information put out by the media about the availability of generic semaglutide (Ozempic) and we've been getting a ton of questions about it. I thought I'd put together an informational post to help answer some of the most common questions we've been getting!

When will generic semaglutide be available?

Inventory will start to become available in a very controlled manner starting this week. Pharmaceutical Wholesalers and drug manufacturers have established maximum order amounts per pharmacy in order to maintain equitable access. Unfortunately they have not released what our weekly order limit will be at this time.

Will I need a new prescription for generic semaglutide?

Currently generic semaglutide and brand name Ozempic are not considered interchangeable by the Ministry of Health. This is a regulatory step and does not mean that the generic is inferior or unsafe but it does mean that we cannot just change it to the generic. A new prescription will be required. We will work with prescribers to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Will my generic semaglutide be covered?

For anyone with coverage through the Ontario Drug Benefit (Seniors, patients on Disability, Social Assistance, uncovered individuals under the age of 25) generic semaglutide is not listed as a covered benefit. This means that brand name Ozempic will still be covered at the full cost (at this time). For patients with private plans this will vary based on your individual coverage but we are guessing that most plans that cover brand name will start to cover generic as soon as it is available.

What if I pay cash? How much can I expect to save?

Drug pricing laws in Ontario prevent us from advertising specific costs of prescription medications but the savings will be around $100.

Can we expect supply issues?

Honestly? Most likely. This has been a trend in recent years of medications going generic and then the generic being unavailable for months at a time after due to demand. There are a number of supply chain issues that impact this but we have been able to adapt and help support our patients through them. We will continue to do so and are here to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
