📢 Attention Kugluktukmiut – Colorectal Cancer Screening Program

The Kugluktuk Health Centre is committed to helping prevent colorectal (bowel) cancer through early screening.

Recently, we have seen members of our community diagnosed with colorectal/abdominal cancer. Early detection can save lives, which is why we encourage everyone who is eligible to participate in screening.

Over the coming weeks, the Health Centre will be sending invitation letters to individuals who may be at higher risk or who are due for screening.

If you receive a letter, please visit the Health Centre to pick up your free FIT (F***l Immunochemical Test) kit. This is a simple test that you can complete at home. It checks for hidden blood in the stool, which can be an early sign of colorectal cancer.

Who should be screened?
• Adults 50–74 years old are encouraged to participate in regular screening.
• If you have a family history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or certain inherited conditions, you may need screening earlier. Please speak with your healthcare provider.

Please don’t ignore your invitation. Most people with early colorectal cancer have no symptoms, and finding it early greatly improves treatment outcomes.

If you have any questions or think you may be at higher risk, please contact or visit the Kugluktuk Health Centre. Our team is here to help.

Together, we can protect the health of our community through early detection. ❤️

Good morning Kugluktukmiut,

We kindly ask all patients to bring any appointment information you receive by email, text message, or mail to the attention of the Medical Travel Clerk.

Many clinics and hospitals in Edmonton now send appointment notifications directly to patients instead of the Kugluktuk Health Centre. As a result, the Health Centre may not be aware of your appointment unless you let us know. It is the patient’s responsibility to inform the Medical Travel Clerk and provide a copy of any appointment letters, emails, or text messages you receive.

We also kindly remind everyone to bring your valid Nunavut Health Care Card to every visit at the Kugluktuk Health Centre, including:

* Blood work appointments
* Nurse appointments
* Doctor appointments
* Emergency visits
* All other health care appointments

We have recently seen an increase in patients receiving hospital bills because their Nunavut Health Care Card had expired at the time they received health care services. To help prevent this from happening, the Kugluktuk Health Centre will begin checking the validity of all Health Care Cards at every patient visit. Please ensure your Health Care Card is valid and bring it with you to every appointment to help avoid unnecessary billing and delays in your care.

A Kind Reminder

We understand that medical travel can sometimes be frustrating. Please remember that our Medical Travel Clerk is here to help every patient to the best of their ability. Many aspects of medical travel, including appointment availability, airline schedules, and specialist clinic decisions, are outside of their control.

We kindly ask everyone to treat our staff with patience, kindness, and respect as they work hard every day to support our community. A little kindness goes a long way, and we truly appreciate your cooperation.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and continued support.

Sincerely,
Kugluktuk Health Centre Team
