How Childhood Childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime: Inuktitut Audio
This video was shared by many students in Nunavik. TLS Nunavik translated the content into Inuktitut for students, teacher, and parents to be shared around Nunavik and Inuit Nunangat. Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain in children This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who have experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease, depression, addiction, cancer, and su***de. Prevention and treatment of trauma need to start with addressing factors that impact so many community members from child hood that were completely out of their control yet impacts physical, emotional, and mental health across a lifetime. It is important to highlight that tools exist to heal and rewire the brain to navigate the impact of persistent and cumulative trauma. This is why TLS Nunavik started customizing content for mindfulness tools that incorporate movement, breathing, and focused attention for schools and community health workers working with vulnerable youth.
Please note, that if you are a parent or child that recognizes your experience in this video, please do not jump to judgement. This content is to offer wisdom on the impact of intergenerational trauma, vicarious trauma, unresolved grief, persistent trauma (PTSD) and so many other factors that impact community members. We invite you to instead move to understanding as to what parents are going through, what youth are going through and move forward with self- compassion and compassion for others with this awareness.
