FIBRE: it’s not just about keeping you regular.

We often think of dietary fibre as the thing that helps us “go”, and yes, adequate fibre is important for healthy bowel movements and preventing constipation.

But fibre does so much more.

Fibre is also food for the trillions of microbes living in your gut. Certain types of fibre are fermented by your gut bacteria, producing beneficial compounds that support the health of your gut and your body more broadly.

A higher-fibre diet is also associated with lower levels of inflammation and a reduced risk of several chronic diseases. And importantly, higher fibre intake is associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer ( although evidence suggests the link is not as strong as we thought).

So how do you get more?

Try these two simple swaps:

1. ADD BERRIES + SEEDS
Throw berries, chia seeds or ground flax into your morning yogurt, oatmeal or smoothie. Easy fibre boost, plus plenty of other nutrients.
2. MAKE ONE MEAL A DAY MORE PLANT-HEAVY
Add a handful of beans or lentils to soup, chili, pasta or a salad. Or simply add an extra serving of vegetables to your plate.

And remember: if you’re increasing your fibre intake, increase it gradually and drink enough fluids. Your gut may need a little time to adjust.

Fibre isn’t glamorous. It doesn’t have a trendy marketing campaign. But your gut bacteria are big fans.

And your future self might be too. 😊

I tell my clients all the time: you don’t necessarily need to find more time for movement. You need to build movement into your day.
But through midlife and beyond, I think we need to take that idea one step further.
Not all movement sends the same message to your body.
Your cardiovascular system needs to be challenged.
Your muscles need to produce force.
Your bones need loading.
Your balance and coordination need practice.
Your brain needs new movement challenges.
This becomes increasingly important as we age because we want to preserve the strength, bone health, cardiovascular capacity, balance and physical independence that allow us to keep doing the things we love.

I wrote more about this in my latest Substack: link is in my bio.

Your strongest years are not behind you.
At 45, I’m not training to become a younger version of myself. I’m training to keep building the strongest, healthiest and most capable version of the woman I am today.
Getting older does not mean becoming weaker, slowing down or accepting that your best years are over.
You can still build muscle.
You can still change your body.
You can still become stronger and more confident.
But you have to decide to begin.
