“I’m just getting older.”

We hear that a lot, especially when it comes to changes in hearing. It can feel like something you are supposed to accept and move past.

But hearing loss is not a personality trait, and it is not something you have to quietly live with or push through.

Hearing changes are a healthcare concern, not something to ignore. Staying connected, confident, and engaged matters at every stage of life.

You do not have to navigate it alone.

Your hearing can reveal more about your health than you might realize.

The inner ear relies on steady blood flow to function properly. Over time, conditions like high blood pressure or heart disease can affect that flow, and sometimes changes in hearing are one of the first signs that something has shifted.

It’s a reminder that hearing is not just about sound. It can offer insight into what’s happening in the body more broadly.

If you’ve noticed a difference, it may be worth paying attention. A Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist (H.I.S.) or Dispenser (H.I.D.) can help you better understand what’s going on and guide you safely.

You know that moment when you just smile and nod…
but you didn’t catch a single word?

Yeah. That gets exhausting.

Pretending to hear takes more energy than people realize, and it can make conversations feel harder than they should be.

The good news is, it doesn’t have to stay that way. With the right support, conversations can feel natural again.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

You can start by connecting with a Hearing Instrument Specialist (H.I.S.) at helpmehear.ca

When we think about diabetes, we often focus on blood sugar, but it can affect more than that. Over time, it can impact blood vessels and nerves throughout the body, including the delicate structures in the inner ear.

ℹ️That is one reason why people with diabetes are twice as likely to experience hearing loss.

It’s an important reminder that changes in hearing are not always isolated. They can be connected to overall health in ways we do not always expect.

Paying attention to those changes is part of taking care of yourself.

If something feels different, connecting with a Hearing Instrument Specialist (H.I.S.) can help you better understand what is going on.

What an incredible few days at the Association of Hearing Instrument Practitioners of Ontario 2026 Symposium!

From May 6 to 8, 2026, professionals from across Ontario came together at Fallsview Casino Resort and Niagara Falls Hilton to learn, connect, share ideas, and celebrate the future of hearing care.

Thank you to all the speakers, attendees, and partners who helped make this event so memorable. We loved seeing the conversations, collaboration, and community throughout the symposium, and we’re already looking forward to next year!

Staying connected to conversations, to people, and to everyday moments plays a bigger role in our overall health than we often realize.

When hearing starts to change, it can affect how the brain processes sound and communication, sometimes making interactions feel more effortful or tiring.

Research shows that the risk of dementia increases with the severity of untreated hearing loss:
• Mild hearing loss: 2× increased risk
• Moderate hearing loss: 3× increased risk
• Severe hearing loss: 5× increased risk

It is a powerful reminder that hearing care is not just about sound. It is about supporting your brain and staying engaged in the world around you.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own.

If you’ve ever had to repeat yourself more than once, or noticed someone you love starting to pull back from conversations, it can make you wonder if they’re hearing everything.

It’s normal to feel unsure about bringing it up. Worrying about someone’s hearing often comes from a place of care.

Starting the conversation isn’t always easy, but it can be one of the most supportive things you do.

You don’t have to figure it out alone. A certified Hearing Instrument Specialist (H.I.S.) can help guide the conversation and provide professional support.
