To The Core Pilates and Nutrition is a locally owned studio that turns 17 this year!

Located just west of the downtown core we are massive supporters of our local charities as well as huge advocates for Discover Lloydminster and Think Lloyd First programs. Owned and operated by Donna Schellenberg, we began as a small family oriented facility which has grown with her own family over the years. We treat our clients as a part of our family and believe everyone that steps through our

doors deserves the absolute best of what we have to offer. Our purpose has always been to awaken a life of limitless joy in others. Although that may sound strange to some, our clients have overcome massive obstacles that impacted every area of their lives. When you're in pain it's tough to enjoy life. It's difficult to move well, do the activities you love with the people you love the most. Often pain impacts incomes and jobs. Most often it impacts our relationships, our sense of self worth and our confidence. Finding joy in moving again gives people back their freedom and a new outlook for the future. We are proud to help people do just that. At To the Core Pilates & Nutrition it is our mission to encourage lifestyle choices that will improve health over the long term and to improve the quality of life of every client. We offer Therapeutic Pilates and specialize in pre and post natal health as well as post rehab care for hip and knee replacements as well as spinal issues such as scoliosis or disc herniations. To the Core also offers personalized Nutrition Coaching. We work with you to develop smart, effective eating choices to meet your fitness and health goals. Together, we will develop and analyze your habits, dietary needs, and track your progress with the support and resources you need. We believe in creating healthy and sustainable habits that last a lifetime and creating realistic goals and expectations for ourselves. No quick fixes or "no pain, no gain" workouts to be found here. We teach our clients to be proactive about their health, listen to their own bodies and to become advocates for their own health and wellness.

"Engage your core!"

If you instantly suck in your stomach and think about a six-pack every time you hear you hear this, you are definitely not alone. But here’s the real scoop: your core is about something much bigger than just your abs.

Let's break down what your core actually is, because hint... it’s not just the front of your body.

1. It’s a Whole Support System (Not Just One Muscle)

Think of your core as a 3D cylinder of support that wraps all the way around your midsection. It is a massive team effort. Your abdominals, back muscles, and glutes all work together to stabilize your spine and pelvis. If you’re only flexing the front of your stomach, you’re missing more than half of your powerhouse.

2. Strength From the Inside Out: Breath & Foundation
True core strength starts much deeper than the surface. In fact, your core has a literal foundation: your pelvic floor.

Your breath is a major player in this system. Your diaphragm (your main breathing muscle) works in perfect harmony with your pelvic floor like a piston:

Inhale: The diaphragm and pelvic floor gently drop.

Exhale: They lift together, creating deep, internal strength from the bottom up.

This deep breath connection is exactly why Pilates focuses so much on how you breathe. It’s the remote control for your deepest stabilizing muscles.

Why a Functional Core Actually Matters
When this entire system fires together, the benefits go way beyond the hour you spend in class. A truly strong core allows you to:

💥 Reduce back pain by taking the pressure off your lumbar spine.

🏃‍♂️ Move with total ease and efficiency in your everyday life.

⚖️ Improve your balance and agility.

The strongest core isn't automatically the one with a visible six-pack. A six-pack just means low body fat; a strong core is the one that supports your spine, keeps you injury-free, and helps you move beautifully.

Sometimes, the hardest work you can do is learning how to let go.

We do love our 'make it happen' clients.

That drive is what makes you successful. But when it comes to healing back pain or pelvic floor issues, you can't always force it. Sometimes your body needs to learn how to relax a muscle before it can learn how to use it properly. If you are always on, your muscles never get a break.

Pilates is all about learning where to control your muscular effort, and where needs to relax. Combined with some MELT Method treatments you'll learn how to let your body feel safe enough to let go, and be capable enough to build strength.

Spring session: officially in the books! ✅ Summer session: currently loading... ☀️

To prepare for an epic summer, the studio will be closed from June 26th through July 5th. We’re giving our incredible staff some well-deserved time to trade their studio gear and toesox for sunglasses and total relaxation.

Curious what we're up to during the break? Here is a totally accurate sneak peek at our staff's official plans:

Donna: Kayaking, golfing, boating and swimming at the lake.... basically anything outside!

Lorelie: Banff and Jasper here I come!

Brooke: Campfire, a nice drink, some art projects, and more than a few books.

Karen: No plans or schedule, staying home, and some downtime. Hopefully avoiding all notifications as much as possible!

Megan: Me, the kids, and the dinos in Drumheller 😎

Collette: My plan is to have no plan. lol.

We will miss you all, but we can't wait to see you back and completely recharged for the summer session starting July 6th! Have a wonderful break! 👋✨

Breathing is something we do without thinking… until it becomes difficult.

For many people living with asthma, COPD, or other breathing challenges, every breath can feel like work.

One of the foundational principles of Pilates is breathwork. Pilates breathing helps improve awareness, rib mobility, posture, and control - all of which can support healthier breathing patterns and lung function.

It’s not just about exercise.

It’s about learning how to move and breathe more efficiently in everyday life.

If you’ve been struggling with tension, shallow breathing, posture, or reduced lung capacity, Pilates may help more than you realize.
