To The Core Pilates and Nutrition is a locally owned studio that turns 17 this year!

Located just west of the downtown core we are massive supporters of our local charities as well as huge advocates for Discover Lloydminster and Think Lloyd First programs. Owned and operated by Donna Schellenberg, we began as a small family oriented facility which has grown with her own family over the years. We treat our clients as a part of our family and believe everyone that steps through our

doors deserves the absolute best of what we have to offer. Our purpose has always been to awaken a life of limitless joy in others. Although that may sound strange to some, our clients have overcome massive obstacles that impacted every area of their lives. When you're in pain it's tough to enjoy life. It's difficult to move well, do the activities you love with the people you love the most. Often pain impacts incomes and jobs. Most often it impacts our relationships, our sense of self worth and our confidence. Finding joy in moving again gives people back their freedom and a new outlook for the future. We are proud to help people do just that. At To the Core Pilates & Nutrition it is our mission to encourage lifestyle choices that will improve health over the long term and to improve the quality of life of every client. We offer Therapeutic Pilates and specialize in pre and post natal health as well as post rehab care for hip and knee replacements as well as spinal issues such as scoliosis or disc herniations. To the Core also offers personalized Nutrition Coaching. We work with you to develop smart, effective eating choices to meet your fitness and health goals. Together, we will develop and analyze your habits, dietary needs, and track your progress with the support and resources you need. We believe in creating healthy and sustainable habits that last a lifetime and creating realistic goals and expectations for ourselves. No quick fixes or "no pain, no gain" workouts to be found here. We teach our clients to be proactive about their health, listen to their own bodies and to become advocates for their own health and wellness.

We learned young to suck in our belly.

Stand taller. Look thinner. Hold it in.

It was well intentioned advice… but constantly gripping your core can actually create more pressure through the abdomen and pelvic floor instead of true strength and support.

Real core strength isn’t about sucking everything in all day.
It’s about learning how to breathe, move, and support your body properly.

Pilates helps teach:
✨ better core function
✨ pelvic floor awareness
✨ breath coordination
✨ strength without tension

Sometimes the strongest core is the one that finally learns to let go a little.

If you’re dealing with pelvic floor issues, pressure, leaking, back pain, or just feeling disconnected from your core, a one-to-one consult can help you understand what your body actually needs.

Book a consult with us to learn how Pilates can support your core and pelvic floor health.

Do you spend hours sitting at a desk, in the car, or looking down at your phone every day?

Over time, our bodies adapt to the positions we spend the most time in, and that can show up as:
- tight hips
- rounded shoulders
- neck tension
- weak glutes
- stiff spines
- poor posture and core weakness

The good news?

Your body is adaptable.

Movement matters.

Pilates helps strengthen the muscles that support better posture, mobility, balance, and everyday movement so you can feel better in your body long term.

At To The Core Pilates & Nutrition, we focus on helping you move better.

Small, consistent changes can make a big difference over time.

You are unique...and your posture, movement patterns, and alignment are too.

No two bodies move exactly the same. Differences in muscles, ligaments, mobility, strength, injuries, and daily habits all influence how your body functions and feels.

That’s why at To The Core Pilates & Nutrition, we don’t believe in a “cookie cutter” approach to Pilates.

Every client begins with a one-to-one consult where we look at posture, movement patterns, and how your body moves as an individual. From there, we help build your practice from the foundation up in a way that works for YOU.

Because movement should support your body, not force your body to fit the movement.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Pilates is that everyone walks into class already flexible, coordinated, and knowing what they’re doing.

Spoiler: they don’t.

Most people start because they’re stiff, sore, disconnected from their body, tired of feeling weak, or just know they need to move more consistently.

That’s exactly why Foundations exists.

You do not need:
❌ to be flexible
❌ cute workout sets
❌ coordination
❌ a “Pilates body”

You DO need:
✔️ a willingness to start
✔️ socks
✔️ maybe a sense of humour

Our beginner Foundations classes are designed to help you learn the basics in a supportive, welcoming environment... no experience needed.

New 4-week sessions begin June 1st:
✨ Mon/Wed at 10:30am
✨ Tues/Thurs at 5:30pm

Sir Mix-A-Lot said it best:
🎶 I like big butts and I cannot lie. 🎶

Turns out… strong glutes and lower body strength are actually important for overall health.

Research has shown that muscle mass in the hips and thighs plays an important role in stability, posture, blood sugar regulation, and healthy movement as we age.

In Pilates, we spend a LOT of time strengthening the backside... and for good reason!

Strong glutes help support the low back, improve pelvic stability, and power everyday movement.

So if your b***y is burning in class… there’s a purpose behind it 😂

Whether you’re a Pilates pro or a total newbie, we’ve all stared at those colorful springs and wondered, “Am I actually lifting anything, or is this just fancy MacGyver equipment?”

The truth is, those springs are doing a lot more than just adding weight.

Here is the breakdown of what’s happening when you click those springs into gear.

While every reformer brand varies slightly, here is the general rule of thumb for the resistance you’re feeling at full extension:
Red (Full tension) 5–25 lbs
Blue (Half tension) 3 –12.5 lbs
White (Light/Quarter tension) - 2.5-6.5lbs

Spring weight doesn’t work the same as dumbbell weight.

In the gym, 20 lbs is 20 lbs. But on a Reformer, we use linear resistance.

👉🏻The Stretch Factor: The further you stretch the spring, the heavier it feels. This means your muscles have to work harder at the peak of the movement.

💪🏻 Constant Tension: Unlike a dumbbell, which can lose its heaviness at the top of a bicep curl due to gravity, the spring is always pulling back.

Why Lighter Isn’t Easier
In most workouts, heavy means hard. In Pilates, the white spring is often the final boss.

When the resistance is light, the reformer carriage becomes unstable. Without a heavy spring to hold you up, your deep stabilizing muscles and core have to fire like crazy just to keep the carriage from flying away.

The real magic happens on the way back in. Controlling the carriage as the springs pull it back in is called eccentric loading.

It builds strength and protects your joints. It requires more brain-to-muscle connection than the initial push.

The goal isn’t to rack up the most springs, it’s to move with the most control.

Next time you’re tempted to click on an extra red spring, try doing the move on a single blue or white instead. Your core will thank you (and probably scream at you) later!

Which spring is your nemesis during your workout? Tell us in the comments! 👇
