Osteopathy dates back to the 1800s? Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathy and osteopathic medicine, believed that the body is in good health when the musculoskeletal systems are properly aligned. Dr. Still called his practice “osteopathy,” combining the two Greek roots for bone – osteon – and suffering – pathos.

In 1892, Dr. Still opened the first osteopathic medical school in the world, the American School of Osteopathy in Missouri, now known as the A.T Still University (ATSU). Since its founding, the practice of osteopathy and support for its students has continued to grow. The OAO is committed to fostering the practice and the professional advancement of its practitioners.

OAO Members can help treat neck and back pain. A recent study on the cost effectiveness of osteopathic care for neck and back pain concluded that in addition to usual care, osteopathic care has higher results for lower costs in the short term. When combined with exercises, manual osteopathic treatment can help decrease pain and improve function for adults with non-specific neck pain.

that OMPs use a technique called soft tissue manipulation? This method is used to evaluate the condition of tissues, ease restrictions, help the body’s fluids (blood, lymph, etc.) flow smoothly and restore function. The goal is to gently guide the tissue back to health without over-treating.

Thanks to your support, we've reached 25,000 signatures for our petition calling for OMPs to be considered essential care providers in Ontario. Despite this strong showing, OMPs in the Toronto, Peel and North Bay-Parry Sound regions are still not able to return to work during the extended lockdown, leaving patients without the care and treatment they require.
