Thanks to the philanthropic vision of the late Archie & Irene Verspeeten, a generous estate gift and several other generous donors, the Precision Oncology at Western University (POWER) study, conducted through the Verspeeten Clinical Genome Centre at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), is helping researchers explore new approaches to cancer care for patients across Southwestern Ontario.

As the first study of its kind in Canada, the study found that nearly one in three patients became eligible for new treatment options based on the unique genetic profile of their tumour. The findings highlight how precision medicine can uncover new possibilities for patients who may have limited treatment options.

Thanks to generous donor support, researchers can explore new approaches to cancer care and bring the promise of precision medicine closer to those who need it most.

What started as a friendship between Craig Combe and Ken MacMaster has grown into a shared commitment to helping others. Together with their families, they have made a transformational $2.4 million gift to advance cancer care at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).

Their generosity will support the purchase of a Varian Ethos therapy system and advanced software for LHSC's fleet of linear accelerators (LINACs)—technology upgrades that will further enhance clinicians' ability to deliver radiation treatments with extraordinary precision.

This is more than an investment in technology—it’s about helping physicians treat cancer more effectively, helping patients spend less time living with uncertainty and helping more families experience hope instead of heartbreak.
