Dr. Michael Ott has been appointed the inaugural Verspeeten Chair in Oncology and Dr. Samuel Asfaha the inaugural Verspeeten Chair in Translational Cancer Research. These appointments follow a $5 million gift from the late Archie and Irene Verspeeten to LHSF, matched by Western University. This contribution is part of the Verspeetens’ transformational $20 million donation in 2024.

Through these donor-supported chair positions, Dr. Ott and Dr. Asfaha will each lead distinct but complementary research programs aimed at advancing cancer discovery and improving treatment approaches from both translational and fundamental science perspectives.

Thank you to the late Archie and Irene Verspeeten, whose generosity continues to make a lasting difference in cancer research and care for our community.

We’re proud to celebrate Nursing Week and the incredible nurses at our hospital 💙 Your compassion, expertise and dedication make a lasting impact on patients and families every day.

Thanks to RBC Foundation’s generous investment in nursing education and training across our hospitals, Project BETTY (Bringing Education and Technology to You) brings hands-on simulation training directly to our hospital units. By expanding access to real-time education and upskilling, RBC is helping empower nurses with the knowledge and confidence they need to provide the best possible care.

Through the generosity of RBC Foundation, nurses are empowered to continue delivering exceptional care to patients and families.

Today, Samm Simon has started his 251 km run from his front door in Stratford to Tobermory Pier. Over the next week, he’ll be covering marathon-distance days in honour of his wife, who is living with terminal cancer. Not a seasoned runner, Samm is doing this in honour of his wife, and to support others affected by cancer.

All funds raised will be distributed three ways equally to London Health Sciences Foundation (LHSF), supporting care at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC)'s Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre, Stratford General Hospital’s emergency department, and Wellspring Stratford Cancer Support Centre.

Today is World Ovarian Cancer Day đź’™, a day to honour loved ones lost, support those currently fighting and push forward in the search for a cure.

More than 3,000 Canadians are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, a disease that is often difficult to detect early and challenging to treat. Each year, the London Run for Ovarian Cancer brings our community together to raise vital funds for ovarian cancer research. Funds raised help scientists understand the biology of ovarian cancer, build better models to study it and test new ideas that could one day lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective therapies.

Without generous community support, much of this work simply would not be possible. Donate to ovarian cancer research today: https://bit.ly/49vFTmL

This week is Mental Health Week—a time to recognize the importance of mental health and the need for accessible, compassionate care.

The First Episode Mood and Anxiety Program (FEMAP) fills a critical gap in care for youth aged 16–25 experiencing the onset of mood and anxiety disorders. Through personalized, patient-centred treatment and shared decision-making, it ensures care is tailored to each individual’s needs and goals. This 100 per cent donor-funded program empowers youth to regain stability, build resilience and look forward to the future.

At the Gerald C. Baines Centre for Translational Cancer Research, science meets precision. Using column chromatography (a lab technique to separate mixtures), chemists purify compounds that can both highlight tumours and deliver targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy, turning a single discovery into a powerful tool to see and treat cancer. Breakthroughs like this are only possible thanks to donor support. You are helping fuel the research and innovation that is shaping the future of cancer care.
