I'm hosting a free virtual hang out to celebrate World Maternal Mental Health week. Wed, May 3 at 7pm-8pm. If you'd like to join, send me a DM! Come learn about maternal mental health concerns, find some helpful resources and hear from parents in a supportive community environment.

Perinatal mental health refers to the range of disorders a woman can face during pregnancy and in the year after giving birth. It is a critical issue affecting nearly 1 in 4 Canadian families, but only 1 in 5 women with perinatal mental health issues are currently accessing treatment.

Su***de is the 4th leading cause of maternal death in Canada.

Maternal mental health is the single greatest determinant of their child’s health over the life course. Perinatal mental illness negatively impacts parental-infant attachment and can impair the child’s cognitive and psychosocial development all the way into adulthood. A 2021 survey found that 95% of health care providers believe current perinatal mental health services are insufficient in Canada. It is time to make a change 🌱

When it comes to prenatals, there are endless options, and it can be difficult to know which one to choose.

Here are three things to look for…

1. Folic Acid - you should have a MINIMUM of 400 micrograms in a prenatal. Depending on your diet/lifestyle, your HCP might recommend a higher amount.

2. Iron - there are many forms of iron, some of which are considered to be more gentle than others. Look for an iron bisglycinate to reduce the risk of digestive upset and constipation.

3. Choline – this is critical for baby’s brain development and mom’s mental health during the pregnancy. Choline can be naturally found in eggs which, thanks to food aversions, may be difficult for a mom to be to consume!

Do you have a hard time relaxing? You 👏 are 👏 not 👏 alone 👏

We’ve been taught and conditioned to work to deadlines, go hard to climb the success ladder. Somewhere along the way, an opportunity was missed to listen to your body. Let’s regain that power 💪

1. First, you have to acknowledge that you are keyed up. What does stress feel like in your body? Where do you hold tension?

2. Label it. Are you stressed? Anxious? Low mood? Working with your ND will help you learn what’s going on

3. Implement tools to lower stress and induce relaxation. These tools will be different for everyone, but the most important thing is that the tools work with your lifestyle.

4. Practice makes perfect. Commit and show up for yourself. Maybe you schedule it in your calendar or add it into your night time routine but you MUST commit.

You can learn more about my approach to stress reduction by joining the waitress for my 4 week challenge. We start again in April ✨ DM me to find out more.

Cortisol is our stress hormone, produced by the adrenal glands. In a perfect world, cortisol peaks first thing in the morning and decreases throughout the day until bedtime. When you are stressed all the time, cortisol levels can be all over the place. Left unchecked, elevated cortisol levels can lead to:
- Blood sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia
- Decreased bone density
- Decreases in muscle tissue
- Higher blood pressure
- Impaired cognitive performance
- Increased abdominal fat
- Lowered immunity and inflammatory responses in the body, slowed wound healing, and other health consequences
- Suppressed thyroid function
- Impaired male and female fertility

And that is why we care about cortisol. Cortisol serves an important role in our body, but left unchecked it can wreak havoc on the body. If you are struggling with stress management, shoot me a DM and lets chat ✨
