Clearing soil for a new skirret patch always leads to underground surprises. 🕵️♂️🖤
Years ago, I planted seeds for Scorzonera (black salsify) and mostly forgot about them. Today, while opening up space for our skirret crowns, I pulled out a few forgotten roots.
The trick with black salsify:
Slice off the lower taproot for cooking (tastes like a delicate blend of oyster and artichoke heart).
Soak it in water to draw out the milky, sticky latex.
Replant the upper crown! Tucking the top root back in the bed means it sprouts right back up next spring.
Perennial roots are the ultimate self-renewing food engine.
Our Fall Skirret Presale is officially live on Etsy, with limited batches of hardy, non-woody bare-root crowns ready for your garden this autumn.
Tap the link in our bio to reserve your crowns before the presale closes! 📦🌿
