Seeding & Soil Temperature – Why It Matters 🌱

As seeding season approaches, one of the most important factors to consider is soil temperature. While it can be tempting to start seeding as soon as the calendar says spring, soil conditions play a major role in crop emergence and early season success.

Pros of Waiting for Warmer Soil Temperatures:
• Faster and more even crop emergence
• Stronger early root development
• Reduced risk of seed rot and disease
• Less stress on the seedling during emergence
• More uniform crop staging throughout the field

Cons of Seeding into Low Soil Temperatures:
• Slow and uneven emergence
• Increased risk of seedling diseases and rot
• Seed sitting in the ground too long before germinating
• Reduced plant vigor and thinner plant stands
• Higher risk of needing reseeding in extreme cases

Cold soils can delay germination significantly, meaning the seed is vulnerable to disease, insects, and environmental stress for a longer period of time. Waiting a few extra days for soil temperatures to warm up can often lead to a healthier, more uniform crop and better yield potential in the long run.

Some things to consider this season:
1- When and where is the best time/place to apply each nutrient?
3- How much fertilizer do you need for the crop you are growing?
4- Would foliar applications supplement your seeding fertility?
4- What products are available to reduce Nitrogen losses and improve Phosphorus availability?
