W**d seeds need to be:
-mature
-dry
-sample needs to be clean
-free from glyphosate application, ideally

Not every insect in your field is a pest. Some are your crop's hardest-working allies.

Beneficial insects play a critical role in protecting yield by naturally keeping pest populations in check, reducing the need for insecticide applications, and supporting a healthier, more balanced ecosystem.

🌱 Meet the good bugs:

🐞 Lady Beetles (Ladybugs) – Voracious predators of aphids, mites, and insect eggs.

🪰 Hoverflies – Adults are valuable pollinators, while larvae feed heavily on aphids.

🦋 Green Lacewings – Their larvae, often called "aphid lions," devour aphids, thrips, mites, and small caterpillars.

🐝 Parasitic Wasps – Tiny but powerful natural enemies that parasitize aphids and caterpillars.

🪲 Ground Beetles – Nighttime hunters that target cutworms, slugs, wireworms, and even w**d seeds.

🐜 Minute Pirate Bugs – Excellent predators of thrips, mites, aphids, and insect eggs, especially in cereals and canola.

🔍 Regular crop scouting helps identify both pests and beneficial insects. Before reaching for an insecticide, take time to assess whether these natural predators are already helping manage pest populations.

Healthy beneficial insect populations are an important part of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)—protecting both your crop and your bottom line.

Insect 🐞 update!!

Now that we’ve made our way through most of the 🐜 Cabbage Seedpod Weevil spraying in canola, we are drawing our attention to the increasing 🐜 Aphid numbers in peas and lentils! (Presumably canaryseed as well).

Simultaneously, we are beginning to monitor for 🐛 Bertha Armyworm and 🐛 Diamondback in canola.

2026 is the year that keeps on giving!

Scout for Cabbage Seedpod Weevil at the starting of bolt, up to first flower. If spraying is warranted, Weevils should be sprayed around 10% flower and can be tank mixed with your Sclerotinia fungicide.

Wheat midge is a significant insect pest of spring wheat across Saskatchewan. Adult midges emerge during warm, calm evenings and lay eggs on developing wheat heads. The larvae feed on developing kernels, reducing both yield and grain quality.

Wheat midge damage can significantly reduce grain grade and yield. Proper scouting and timing are critical to determine if management is necessary and to protect crop quality.

As canola crops are all over the map with staging due to excessive moisture and lack of heat, keeping an eye out for pests is key to prevent yield loss. Scouting regularly and at different times of the day can help identify and prevent any pest outbreaks.
