International Overdose Awareness Day | August 31

Every statistic tells a story. Every number represents a person, a family member, a friend, a coworker, or a neighbour.

• 80% of those who died were men
• 68% were between 30-59 years old
• 53% of deaths occurred in a private home
• 21% were employed in trades, trucking, and equipment operations
• 28% occurred in supportive housing, shelters, hotels, and other residences
• 35-40% of First Nations toxic drug poisoning deaths were First Nations women and girls
• 80% involved fentanyl

• 83 people who called the lower Sunshine Coast home died from toxic drug poisoning

These numbers challenge many of the assumptions people hold about who is affected by the toxic drug crisis. The reality is that substance use and toxic drug poisonings touch families, workplaces, homes, and communities across British Columbia.

We remember those who have died. We support those grieving. We honour the lives behind the statistics. We raise awareness to reduce stigma and encourage compassion.

Join us as we come together in remembrance, reflection, and community.

• Monday, August 31, 2026
• 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
• Hackett Park, ch’atlich - Sechelt

Together, we remember. Together, we learn. Together, we work toward a future where fewer lives are lost.

We Remember

On International Overdose Awareness Day, we pause to honour the people whose lives were lost to overdose and toxic drug poisoning.

They were family members, friends, parents, children, coworkers, teammates, neighbours, and community members.

They were loved. They mattered. They are missed.

Today we stand with everyone carrying grief, remembrance, and hope. We acknowledge the lasting impact of these deaths and the strength of those who continue to advocate for compassion, dignity, and change.

As we gather on Monday August 31, may we remember not only how people died, but how they lived.

Always remembered. Never forgotten.

New Physician Joining PHHC

The Pender Harbour Health Centre invites the community to join us in welcoming Dr. Leo Bay to the Health Centre team. Dr. Bay will begin practicing at the Health Centre in September 2026 and will attach local patients through the provincial Health Connect Registry.

Additional details are available in the announcement below from the Sunshine Coast Division of Family Practice.

The Pender Harbour Health Centre Board, staff, and patients warmly welcome Dr. Bay and his family, and thank them for choosing the Pender Harbour Health Centre and the Sunshine Coast as a place to practice medicine and call home.

We also thank the Sunshine Coast Division of Family Practice and its recruitment and retention team for their collaboration and support.

There is no need to call the Health Centre to be attached to Dr. Bay. Patients will be attached to Dr. Bay and the Pender Harbour Health Centre through the provincial Health Connect Registry. This week, the Health Centre will begin sending letters to patients who have been attached to Dr. Bay, inviting them to book a meet-and-greet appointment to complete the attachment process. If you do not have a physician and are not registered, we encourage you to sign up at https://www.healthlinkbc.ca/find.../health-connect-registry

If you have questions, please contact Nick Gaskin, Executive Director, at [email protected].
