47. How?!. 😂
I literally had to pull out a calculator and do 2026 - 1979 to figure out how old I am this year.
Because in my head, I'm still somewhere in my 20s. Surely I can't be pushing 50?!
And yet, here we are.
The funny thing about getting older is that I don't necessarily *feel* older. Sure, my body occasionally reminds me that I'm not 25 anymore, and there are things I have absolutely zero patience for anymore, but in so many ways I still feel like that younger version of myself.
Just with a little more life experience, a few more wrinkles, and a much lower tolerance for bu****it.
I used to think that by this age I'd have everything figured out. That at some point I'd magically become a proper adult who knew exactly what she wanted, made all the right decisions, and had some sort of grand plan.
Spoiler alert: hasn't happened. 😂
I've changed my mind about things I was once so sure of. I've made decisions that didn't turn out the way I hoped. I've said yes when I really wanted to say no. I've worried way too much about what other people think, and I've spent far too much time trying to get things right.
And despite knowing better, I still do some of those things.
I teach people to slow down, listen to themselves, and give themselves a little grace. And then I catch myself doing the exact opposite. Go figure.
But I think one of the biggest things I'm learning as I get older is that there isn't always a right or wrong decision. Sometimes there's just what's right for me, right now. And what feels right today might not feel right five years from now.
That doesn't mean I got it wrong. It means I've changed, learned something, or simply want something different. And people are going to have opinions about it all anyway, so who cares?! (me ...sometimes - see still learning)
There are parts of getting older that I love, parts that are fu***ng weird, and parts I'm still trying to wrap my head around. I don't love every wrinkle, ache, or change that comes with it, and I'm not going to pretend I do.
But I do really like all the versions of myself and the one that I'm still becoming, even if I'm still figuring out who that is.
So here's to 47. To a few more wrinkles, a little more perspective, changing my mind, making mistakes, laughing at myself, and probably learning the same damn lessons a few more times.
Still learning. Still unlearning. Still very much human. 🤍
And hopefully never feeling quite as old as the number on my birthday cake.
What's something you've had to learn (or unlearn) as you've gotten older?
