when i was 19 my grandmother told me she never wanted to see or hear from me again
disowned was the word she used
and she kept her word
she died 3 years ago (almost to the day) and i never saw or heard from her after that day 23 years ago
so when a family member reached out to share she had died i didnât feel anything
and it was the lack of feeling that eventually cracked me open
relationships between the women in my family and myself are tumultuous at best and non-existent otherwise
and it didât matter
what i did
what i said
how i acted
who i tried to be
it was never enough
and the thing is, it never would have been
never will be
our bodies and the lives we lead within them are shaped by our experiences
our beliefs
our perceptions
and through those we form an identity
and we begin to see the world in relation to who we believe ourselves to be
what we believe we deserve
and consciously or not - we look for evidence to reinforce these beliefs of ours, the lives we live and the shape our body needs to take to stay the course within it
(and others do the same)
and what took me far too long to learn - and i was reminded of this past winter when another family member decided she knew who i was and that the person she perceived me to be was not welcome in her life - was that you have no control
over someones beliefs
over someones perceptions
over someones identity and how they view the world
over how they see you in order to maintain it
protect it
protect themselves
no matter your intentions
no matter your own perceptions and beliefs
so when my grandmother died having stayed true to her word
true to who she believed herself and i to be
i felt grief and loss and an ache deep within my bones
