LONGEVITY & HEALTH TIPS ... # 2 WATER
Water is essential for life, making up 50% to 65% of your total body weight. It acts as the body's transport & cooling system, regulating temperature, lubricating joints, delivering oxygen & nutrients to cells & flushing out waste to keep all major systems functioning properly. Water supports healthy skin & digestion & aids in weight management.
Water is the most essential nutrient for the human body. While we can survive for weeks without food, we can only go a few days without water. Even slight dehydration (as little as a 2% drop in fluid levels) can lead to headaches, fatigue & decreased motor skills.
Adequate hydration varies from person to person. Every day we lose eight to 12 cups of water through breathing, perspiring & urine & bowel movements. In general, men need at least 12 cups of fluid daily, while women require a minimum of 9 cups.
While you should meet most of your fluid needs by drinking water, beverages such as soups, milk, 100% fruit juice & decaffeinated teas are an option. Fruits & vegetables also contain a fair amount of water. Since it's hard to track the amount of water you get from food, it's best to try for at least 8 cups of fluid daily, starting with 1-2 with a pinch of sea salt first thing out of bed in the morning!
Use water in other unique ways to optimize health: cold plunges and steam/saunas...they have been around for a very long time — dating back about 10,000 years! Research shows that sauna use may help with sleep, relaxation, anxiety, depression & burnout. Similarly, cold plunges have been shown to lower stress, heighten mood, foster sleep quality & slightly enhance overall quality of life.
